Registered Nurse Travel/Contract Opportunity
Location: Chesapeake, Virginia
Job Details
- Specialty: Registered Nurse (RN)
- Employment Type: Travel/Contract
- Contract Length: 13 weeks
- Shift: 3x12 or 4x12 hour shifts (nights, weekdays, every other weekend, float, holidays)
- Overtime: OT billed after 48 hours on 4x12 schedule; 48-hour contract with OT after 48 available
- Patient Population:
- Neurosurgical and post-stroke
- Respiratory failure
- Renal failure
- Post-surgical
- Trauma
- Sepsis and MODS
- Heart failure and post-cardiac catheterization
Requirements
- Licensure:
- Virginia RN license or Compact License required at time of application
- No license or background issues accepted
- Must reside more than 50 miles from facility (local candidates within 50 miles not accepted)
- Certifications:
- BLS (American Heart Association)
- ACLS (American Heart Association)
- NIH Stroke Scale (NIHSS) certification required
- Experience:
- Strong neuro experience required (post-neurosurgical, EVD, stroke care)
- 3 years critical care experience preferred but strong candidates without 3 years will be considered
- Travel experience preferred
- Skills:
- Ventilator management
- IV drip titration
- Telemetry monitoring
- Conscious sedation
- Dysrhythmia and emergency management
- Float Requirements:
- Must be willing to float to Stepdown Unit
- May also float to Emergency Department (ED) or MedSurg to care for ICU patients being held
- Patient Ratios: 1:2-3
- Technology: EPIC proficiency required
Compliance & Documentation
- Background Checks:
- 7-year criminal background check within 1 year of start, updated annually
- EPLS/GSA/SAM and HHS/OIG checks required within 30 days of start and updated for renewals
- Health Requirements:
- Physical exam within 1 year, updated annually
- Negative TB test or chest X-ray within 1 year, annual TB testing required
- Fit test for N95 mask within 1 year (PAPR not allowed)
- Immunizations/titers required within 10 years for:
- Rubeola (Measles)
- Mumps
- Rubella
- Hepatitis B (titer or declination)
- Varicella
- Tdap vaccine required for select units (Mother Baby, L&D, Nursery, ER), preferred for others
- Negative 10-panel drug screen within 12 months
- Seasonal flu vaccination required (or approved exemption) for 2025-26 season
- COVID-19 vaccine preferred but not required
- Testing & Competencies:
- Pass/fail EKG/medication test required for all RNs (except Mother-Baby/Couplet Care/Postpartum)
- Medication/pharmacology competency exam as applicable
- Color blindness test with 100% passing score required
- Other Documentation:
- Government-issued photo ID required for verification
- Passport-style photo for badge (specific requirements)
- References: Proof of 2 references required
- Employment application/resume required
- Unit-specific skills checklist updated annually
- Job description acknowledgment required
- Orientation safety manual acknowledgment required
- Acknowledgment of pass/fail testing required for ICU, Stepdown, ER, Telemetry, MS/Tele, Endoscopy, PACU, Surgical Admitting Unit
Additional Notes
- Candidates must have no prior license or background issues.
- Must provide driver's license for address verification before offer acceptance.
- Strong neuro experience is mandatory; includes care for post-neurosurgical patients, EVD, stroke, ventilators, and telemetry.
- Floating to other units including Stepdown, ED, and MedSurg is expected.
- EPIC electronic medical record proficiency is mandatory.
- Local candidates residing within 50 miles of the facility will not be considered.
