Telemetry Nurse (4W) - Bakersfield, California

Job Overview

• Position: Telemetry Nurse for a travel contract
• Location: Bakersfield, CA
• Unit: 4W Telemetry
• Contract Length: 13 weeks
• Facility Size: 31 beds (11 private & 10 semi-private)
• Shift Length: 12-hour shifts (7:00 AM - 7:30 PM)
• Scheduling: Block scheduling allowed if unit needs are met (not guaranteed)
• Weekend Requirement: 4 shifts per 4-week schedule

  • Night shifts: Friday/Saturday
  • Day shifts: Saturday/Sunday
• Holiday Requirement: Participate in permanent staff holiday rotation (1 major & 1 minor holiday)

Required Qualifications

• Minimum 2 full years of nursing experience
• Active licenses and certifications:

  • California RN License
  • BLS (Basic Life Support)
  • ACLS (Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support)
  • NIHSS (National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale)

Patient Population & Common Diagnoses

• Post pacemaker patients
• Hemodialysis patients
• New onset atrial fibrillation (Afib) or rapid ventricular response (RVR)
• Stepdown patients from ICU
• Surgical patients (excluding cardiac surgery)
• Urology patients (e.g., cystoscopy)
• Oncology patients with cardiac monitoring needs
• Some orthopedic patients (rare)
• Correctional patients (federal)
• Stroke and traumatic brain injury (TBI) patients
• High acuity patients, including those with bedsores, PEG tubes, sepsis
• Approximately one-third of patients come from nursing homes

Unit & Work Environment

• Nurse-to-patient ratio: 1:4
• EMR system: Cerner
• Charge Nurse: Shift Manager & Resource Nurse
• Nurse Aides: 2 on day shifts, 1 on night shifts
• Telemetry equipment: Phillips monitors (must be able to read and interpret all cardiac rhythms)
• Ventilator support: CPAP or BiPAP (per Respiratory Therapist)
• Respiratory Therapist available 24/7
• Pharmacy available 24/7 with Omnicell system
• Hospitalist or Intensivist on call after hours
• No dedicated IV team
• Call requirements: Must report within 30 minutes if placed on standby/call

Floating & Orientation

• Travelers are the first to float
• Possible float units:

  • Medical-Surgical West (MSW)
  • Medical Behavioral Health (MHB)
  • 2W MedSurg remote telemetry
  • MedSurg SW
  • ICU telemetry holds
  • Emergency Room holds
• Floor-specific orientation: 1-2 shifts with a preceptor

Dress Code

• Scrub color: Navy blue
• Scrub jackets must be navy
• Undershirts under scrubs must be navy, white, or black

This position is ideal for experienced telemetry nurses comfortable with a diverse patient population and flexible floating assignments in a busy hospital setting.
