Job Description

• Medical-Surgical/Telemetry unit in a community hospital setting
• Local candidates allowed at the same rate as travelers
• New travelers accepted with 1-2 years of experience
• Community hospital experience preferred
• EPIC electronic medical record system required

Licensure & Certification Requirements

• Permanent Virginia RN license required (no temporary licenses accepted)
• NURSYS verification required for all RNs
• Certifications required (AHA only):

  • ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support)
  • BLS (Basic Life Support)
  • PALS (Pediatric Advanced Life Support) – if applicable
  • NRP (Neonatal Resuscitation Program) – if applicable
  • TNCC (Trauma Nursing Core Course) – if applicable
• Other certifications as per unit job descriptions
• No onsite renewals; certifications expiring within 1 month of contract start are not accepted

Background & Compliance Checks

• Criminal background check within 60 days of start, including:

  • All states lived/worked in past 7 years
  • State of permanent residence
  • VA Statewide Repository Search
  • Sex Offender Registry
  • Education verification
• EPLS/GSA/SAM and HHS/OIG checks required within 30 days of start
• Fingerprinting (Virginia State Police National Criminal Background Check) required for certain units (Pediatrics, NICU, Psych) with proof of submission prior to start
• Virginia Central Registry (CPS) search required for Pediatrics, NICU, Psych units with timely submission and proof of application
• Education verification: Degree from NLN or CCNE accredited program required

Health & Immunization Requirements

• Physical exam within 1 year attesting ability to meet job demands
• Fit mask test (medical fit test) within 1 year prior to start
• Immunizations and titers required:

  • Tetanus/Diphtheria/Tdap (declination accepted with handwritten signature)
  • Negative TB test (Q-gold/T-spot within 30 days or two PPDs including one within 30 days)
  • Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Rubella, Varicella titers with boosters if low titer
  • Hepatitis B titer, vaccine series, or declination accepted
• Annual TB questionnaire required
• Seasonal flu vaccination or approved exemption required (no declinations accepted without exemption form)
• Latex questionnaire required prior to start
• Drug screening within 30-60 days of start (9-panel minimum, instant screens not accepted)

Orientation & Competency Requirements

• Pharmacology exam, Point of Care Testing, Airborne Precaution Mask Fitting during orientation (not pass/fail)
• Basic Knowledge Assessment Tool (BKAT) for Tele/Step-Down, Progressive Care, ICU units
• Completion of assigned learning modules (~6 hours) during orientation week
• Competency exams as applicable (medication test, abuse reporting, color blindness, sonography, etc.)
• Abuse reporting competency covering physical/sexual abuse, domestic violence, neglect/exploitation of elderly or incapacitated adults

Documentation & Other Requirements

• Government-issued photo ID required on person during work hours
• Photo for badge required prior to document due date (specific photo guidelines apply)
• Confidentiality agreement required prior to start
• References: 2 required
• Complete application/resume required
• Skills checklist updated annually required

• Candidates must provide proof of primary residence matching compact licensure for Virginia
• No onsite certification renewals; all must be scheduled and completed prior to start
• Fingerprinting results and CPS search results can be pending at start if proof of submission is on file
• Candidates must follow detailed instructions for fingerprinting and CPS application processes
• Local candidates are eligible to apply at the same rate as travelers
