ER RN Position - Phoenix, Arizona

Facility Overview

• Large teaching hospital with 607 beds
• Level 1 Trauma center
• Nationally recognized tertiary care, medical education, and research center
• Specialties include lung, liver, and kidney transplants
• Affiliated with Barrow Neuro Institute (world’s #1 neuro institute)
• Teaching hospital with nursing students present

Unit Details

• Unit: Emergency Department (ED) / Trauma
• Beds: 36 acute, 54 subacute; 6 trauma bays (no travelers assigned here)
• Patient volume: ~250-300 patients per day, ~88,000 per year
• Common diagnoses: Trauma, burns; pediatric patients transferred out
• Psych holds: 30-40 patients
• Nurse-to-patient ratio: 1:4
• Charge nurses: 2 (light patient load or task assignments)
• Nurse aides: 4 patient care technicians (sitters)
• Telemetry monitors: Phillips, must be able to read strips
• Ventilators managed by Respiratory Therapy (RT)
• RT coverage: 24/7
• Pharmacy: 24/7 with pharmacist in ER 10 hours/day
• Hospitalists/Intensivists: Minimum 2 MDs onsite, up to 8; midlevels and anesthesia present

Orientation & Training

• Weekly orientations on Mondays (except holidays)
• Floor-specific orientation: 2-3 shifts on the floor
• SIMs Lab required for Foley catheter insertion and central line dressing changes (pass/fail)

  • Exceptions: Neuro ICU and ED have modified SIMs requirements
• Additional training on lifts, restraints, and wound care (educational only)
• Day 1 pass/fail exam during orientation (study guide provided)
• Prophecy Dysrhythmia Exam required 24-48 hours prior to acceptance (max 2 attempts)
• Must pass Dysrhythmia exam before accepting position; failure results in 6-month disqualification in region

Requirements & Qualifications

• Minimum 2 years of core ER nursing experience required
• Must have at least 1 year of Level 1 Trauma experience (8+ months considered for screening)
• Previous travel experience required for ED or Neuro ICU
• Cerner EMR experience required for ED
• ACLS, BLS, and PALS certifications required
• Preferred certifications: TNCC and ATCN (ENPC not accepted in place of PALS)
• No facial piercings allowed; natural hair colors only
• Male candidates must be clean-shaven for fit testing
• Must be able to float between 4 facilities within ~30 minutes (main hospital, Westgate, and 2 freestanding ERs)
• Travel teams must have their own vehicles
• Cannot hold multiple contracts simultaneously within this system
• Must have been off permanent staff in this system for 12 months before travel assignment consideration

Work Schedule & Conditions

• Contract length: Minimum 13 weeks
• Shifts: 12-hour shifts
• Weekend requirement: 4 weekend shifts per 4-week period (unit discretion)
• Scrub color: Navy
• Float policy: Float within ER and between associated facilities
• Parking: Assigned parking with shuttle to facility; night shift uses parking garage

• Candidates must submit detailed profiles including unit size, hospital size, trauma level, and EMR experience
• Float assignments can occur mid-shift
• Facility expects competency in sterile technique and common nursing skills; lack of competency may disqualify candidate
