Registered Nurse (Neuro Oncology) - Travel/Contract

Location: Kansas City, Missouri
Facility Type: Tertiary Care Hospital, Level 1 Trauma, Teaching Hospital, 5-time Magnet Aware Winner
Contract Length: 13 weeks


Job Details

  • Specialty: Registered Nurse - Neuro Oncology
  • Experience Required: Minimum 2 years oncology experience required
  • First-timers Accepted: Yes
  • Shift Requirements:
    • Ratios: 1:5
    • Weekend Requirement: 8 weekend shifts per 6-week schedule period (Friday/Saturday/Sunday combination)
    • Holiday shifts and Charge RN assignments as needed
  • Floating: Yes, within scope to all intermediate areas
  • Guaranteed Hours: 3 shifts per 13 weeks
  • Local Candidates: Not accepted (home must be at least 75 miles from facility)
  • Pending License Accepted: Yes
  • Return to Office Restrictions: No more than 7 days

Required Certifications

  • BLS (Basic Life Support)
  • State RN License (Missouri) with Primary Source Verification (NURSYS)
  • Oncology-specific competencies and unit-specific competency exams
  • Medication/Pharmacology competency exam
  • Color Blind Testing (within 12 months)
  • Other certifications may be required depending on unit (e.g., ACLS, PALS, TNCC, NIH Stroke Certification)

Required Skills & Knowledge

  • IV Therapy/Infusions: Administration of coagulation factors, antifungals, antivirals, blood/blood product administration, care and management of ports, central line blood draws, infusion pump management, intravenous medications (antibiotics, antiemetics, corticosteroids)
  • Oncologic Emergencies: Sepsis management
  • Psychosocial Care: Advanced directives, patient/family education and support
  • Symptom Management: Skin/mucous membrane alterations, altered mental status, constipation/diarrhea, dysphagia, edema, nausea/vomiting, neuropathy
  • Professional Skills: Chest tube care, colostomy care, Foley catheter insertion/management, isolation and neutropenic precautions, telemetry interpretation and monitoring, wound care
  • Pain Management: IV push narcotics, PCA pump management, transdermal patches, medication tolerance/dependence assessment
  • Surgical Care: Post-surgical care, especially uro-gynecological and gynecologic oncology surgical populations
  • Chemotherapy: Body fluid handling post-chemotherapy, oral chemotherapy administration, recognition and communication of abnormal lab values
  • Radiation Therapy: Radiation safety precautions, wound care
  • Biotherapy: Recognition and management of side effects
  • Preferred Skills: Accessing ports, management of acute tumor lysis syndrome, anaphylaxis, extravasation injury, hemorrhage, hospice care, withholding/withdrawing treatment
  • Cancer Types Treated: Bladder/kidney, brain, breast, colorectal, ENT, leukemia/blood dyscrasias, liver, lung, lymphoma/non-Hodgkin’s, melanoma, multiple myeloma, ovarian/uterine, pancreatic, prostate

Unit & Work Environment

  • Primary oncology unit treating all cancer types across all phases of care (work-up to therapy completion)
  • Administer inpatient chemotherapy regimens
  • Step-down neuro overflow unit for strokes, head bleeds, and neurological needs
  • Inpatient oncology setting

Compliance & Documentation Requirements

  • Government-issued ID (Driver’s License or State ID)
  • Criminal background check (7-year search, statewide and nationwide as applicable) within 6 months of start
  • EPLS/GSA/SAM and HHS/OIG quarterly checks
  • Education verification of highest nursing degree
  • State-specific background checks (Missouri and Illinois as applicable)
  • Various facility-specific documents including HIPAA acknowledgement, latex allergy questionnaire, confidentiality form, regulatory compliance education, TB questionnaire, hand hygiene, fingernail, and dress code policies
  • Physical exam within 1 year of start
  • Fit mask testing (N95) annually
  • Immunizations and titers: Tdap, TB testing, MMR (measles, mumps, rubella), varicella, flu vaccination or exemption
  • Drug testing within 1 year of start, must remain valid throughout assignment
  • References: Two professional references required (supervisors preferred)
  • Employment application and unit-specific skills checklist (including oncology skills)

This position is ideal for experienced oncology RNs comfortable with complex inpatient care, chemotherapy administration, and neuro-oncology patient management in a high-acuity, teaching hospital environment.
