Neuro ICU Travel Nurse Opportunity - Phoenix, Arizona

Facility Overview

  • 32-bed Neuro ICU unit within a large hospital (450+ beds)
  • Level 1 Trauma center
  • Teaching hospital with nursing students
  • Associated with Barrow Neurological Institute, a top-ranked neurosurgical training center
  • Hospital specialties include lung, liver, and kidney transplants
  • 24/7 Respiratory Therapy and Pharmacy support
  • Uses Cerner EMR system
  • Phillips monitors and ventilators available on unit

Contract Details

  • Minimum contract length: 13 weeks
  • 12-hour shifts (7am-7pm or 7pm-7am)
  • 4 weekend shifts per 4-week period
  • Holidays worked based on unit coverage and core staff rotation
  • Floating required between all ICU floors and Telemetry units (Tele patient ratio 4:1)
  • Charge nurse role available (does not take patients)
  • Orientation: 2 shifts on the floor plus weekly orientation on Mondays (except holidays)

Experience & Certifications Required

  • Minimum 2 years of ICU experience in a large hospital (450+ beds)
  • Level 1 Trauma experience required
  • Previous travel experience in Neuro ICU or ED required (3-6 months)
  • Must have strong neuro assessment skills and ICP monitoring experience
  • Experience with EVD (External Ventricular Drain) required
  • ACLS and BLS certifications required
  • Cerner EMR experience required for ED; Neuro ICU uses Cerner as well

Clinical Requirements & Testing

  • Prophecy Dysrhythmia Exam required 24-48 hours prior to acceptance (max 2 attempts)
  • Day 1 pass/fail exam during orientation (study guide provided)
  • SIMs Lab required for Foley catheter insertion and central line dressing changes (pass/fail)
    • Neuro ICU requires Foley catheter insertion competency
    • Strict sterile field maintenance expected
  • Must be competent in lifts, restraints, and wound care (educational only)
  • Must pass onboarding paperwork by Wednesday 1pm CST before start date (no exceptions)

Additional Requirements & Notes

  • No facial piercings and only natural hair colors allowed
  • Male candidates must be clean-shaven for fit testing
  • Candidates cannot hold multiple contracts simultaneously within this system
  • Must have own vehicle for travel assignments
  • 50-mile radius rule applies for travel distance verification
  • Nurses may be floated to Medical-Surgical Telemetry floors
  • Parking assigned with shuttle service to facility (night shift parking in garage)
  • Must have been off permanent staff at this hospital system for 12 months to qualify for travel assignment

Patient Population & Common Diagnoses

  • Critical care patients with neurological diagnoses
  • Procedures include craniotomies, brain tumor removals, ablations, brain biopsies, complicated spine surgeries, and scoliosis repair

This position is ideal for experienced Neuro ICU nurses with strong critical care skills, trauma experience, and a commitment to maintaining high clinical standards in a teaching hospital environment.
