Job Opportunity: Registered Nurse (Travel/Contract)

Location: Newport News, Virginia
Contract Length: 13 weeks


Position Details

  • Float position in Medical-Surgical (MS) unit
  • Locals allowed to apply
  • EPIC experience required
  • NIH Stroke Scale (NIHSS) certification and stroke education required

Required Certifications & Training

  • BLS (Basic Life Support): Current certification required; online CPR not accepted
  • ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support): Required for CCU, ER, ICU, MICU, OICU, SICU, and Tele specialties (except CVT Tele – preferred)
  • PALS (Pediatric Advanced Life Support): As applicable, check unit requirements
  • NRP (Neonatal Resuscitation Program): As applicable, check unit requirements
  • EFM (Electronic Fetal Monitoring): As applicable, check unit requirements
  • NIH Stroke Certification: Required for all inpatient RNs (except OR and PICC); must be updated annually
  • Stroke Education CEUs: Required annually, hours vary by unit (e.g., ICU, Neuro ICU, MICU – 6 hours; ER, PACU, Interventional – 4 hours; Med Surg, Labor and Delivery – 1 hour)
  • Medication/Pharmacology Competency Exam: Must be completed within one year of start date
  • Pass/Fail Testing (EKG/Medication): Facility-administered computer-based learning during orientation

Background & Compliance Requirements

  • 7-year criminal background check covering all locations lived/worked in past 7 years
  • Virginia State Police National Criminal Background Check fingerprint results (effective 7/15/2025)
  • Drug screen within last 12 months (specific panels required)
  • Physical exam within last 12 months
  • Negative TB test or chest X-ray within last 12 months; if positive, clearance letter required
  • Immunizations/vaccinations required or documented exemption for:
    • Rubeola (Measles)
    • Mumps
    • Rubella
    • Hepatitis B
    • Varicella
  • Seasonal flu vaccination required during flu season (10/1–3/31) with strict deadlines; medical or religious exemptions accepted with approval
  • COVID-19 vaccination preferred (initial series)

Documentation & Facility Policies

  • Government-issued photo ID required
  • Recent professional photo for badge (taken within last 6 months, work-appropriate attire, neutral background)
  • Confidentiality agreement, dress code policy, scrub color policy, safety brochure, drug-free policy, and hand washing hygiene policy must be reviewed and signed prior to start
  • References: Two professional references required
  • Employment application/resume required
  • Skills checklist must be updated annually

Additional Notes

  • Candidates must be at least 21 years old; 25 if transporting patients
  • Pending background checks may be considered on a case-by-case basis
  • Orientation includes computer-based learning with multiple attempts allowed for passing required tests
  • Stroke CEUs must be completed via Relias platform
  • Some certifications and requirements may vary depending on unit assignment; confirm with program management if unclear
