Registered Nurse Travel/Contract Position
Location: Charleston, South Carolina
Facility Type: Level I Trauma Center, Teaching Facility, Magnet Hospital
Unit: 7A Family Medicine (18 Bed Medical Surgical Unit)
- Focus on adult patients with chronic illnesses; mix of medical and some surgical patients
Job Details
- Shift: 3 shifts per week, 12 hours each (7:00 PM - 7:30 AM)
- Patient Ratios: 1:4 to 1:5
- Weekend Requirement: 4 weekend shifts per month
- Holiday Rotation: Yes
- Floating: May be required to float within scope to like units
- Experience Required: Minimum 1 year
- License Required: South Carolina RN license or Multi-State/Compact RN license
- Certifications Required: BLS (Basic Life Support) mandatory; others depend on unit
- First-time Travelers: Accepted
- Local Candidates: Accepted on a case-by-case basis within 60 miles radius
- Contract Length: 13 weeks
Facility Highlights
- Beds: 820 staffed beds
- Charting System: EPIC
- Scrub Color: Solid Royal Blue or White top with Royal Blue bottoms
- Parking: Permit required for garage parking; additional fees may apply for other locations
- Emergency Assignments: During hurricane season (June-November, peak in August-September), all staff may be assigned to emergency response teams
Required Documentation & Compliance
- Work Eligibility: Completed and accurate I-9 form and attestation confirming US work eligibility
- Identification: Copy of Driver’s License/State ID and Social Security Card (or SSN verification)
- Background Checks:
- Annual background check covering last 7 years of residence/employment
- Searches include SSN trace, statewide, sex offender registry, national criminal, FACIS 3, EPLS/GSA/SAM, HHS/OIG
- Education Verification: Required; diploma or transcripts accepted as placeholder if verification pending
- References: Proof of 2 clinical references or hospital evaluations
- Employment History: Verification of last 3 clinical employers (or all if fewer than 3)
- Skills Checklist: Must be updated annually
- Radiation Badge: Required for specific roles (e.g., CVOR, OR, Cath Lab, Radiation Oncology); not required for MRI or Mammography Techs
Certifications (Must be current, no expiration within 30 days of start)
- BLS: Required for all clinical staff (AHA or ARC accepted)
- ACLS: Required for Adult Critical Care, Labor & Delivery, Cath Lab, ER, ICU, Interventional Radiology (RNs), PACU, PCU (specific units), PreOp, Observation Unit
- PALS: Required for Pediatric units except Pediatric OR; preferred for Pediatric OR
- NRP: Required for applicable neonatal roles (AHA/AAP only)
- TNCC: Required as applicable; not required for ER RNs
- CHEMO: Required only for Oncology Hospital Unit (specific unit)
- EFM: Electronic Fetal Monitoring certification (AWHONN or NCC accepted)
- IV Therapy Certification: Required for select LPNs providing IV therapy
- NIH Stroke Certification: Required for ER and as applicable
- Tech Certifications: Required for Medical Assistants, Phlebotomists, Sterile Processing Techs, Ultrasound Techs, Pathology Assistants, MLTs (ASCP or registry eligible)
Competency Exams
- Medication/Pharmacology competency exam required as applicable
- Color Blind Testing required prior to start
- Competency exams required; Pediatric OR prefers pediatric-specific exam but accepts regular if no pediatric experience
Health & Safety Requirements
- Physical Exam: Initial and annual updates required, attesting ability to meet job demands
- Fit Mask Test: N95 fit test within 90 days prior to start, renewed annually (specific mask models required)
- Vaccinations:
- Tdap within 10 years or declination form
- Flu vaccine required during flu season (Aug 1 - Apr 30); medical/religious exemptions accepted but no declinations
- COVID vaccines highly preferred; declination form required if not vaccinated
- Measles, Mumps, Rubella, Varicella: Positive titer or vaccination series required; boosters if low titer
- Hepatitis B: Titer, vaccine series, or declination required
- TB Testing: Negative T-spot or Q-Gold within 90 days; annual TB questionnaire required
- Drug Testing: 10-panel drug screen within 90 days of start; no instant tests accepted
- CBC and Biochem Panel: Required for Sterile Processing Techs due to chemical exposure risk
Facility Specific Requirements
- Orientation: Completion of First Day Instructions (FDI) and OurDay modules prior to start; estimated 2-6 hours depending on location
- Photo for Badge: Clear, passport-style photo with solid light background, frontal view, business casual attire; must be submitted by Wednesday before start
- Physical Assessment for Sterile Processors: Required, completed by licensed provider within 1 year of start
- Respiratory Safety Clearance: Fit testing required; PAPR not provided by facility; facial hair may require traveler to provide own PAPR
Notes
- Managers may approve block scheduling based on unit needs
- All requested time off (RTO) must be submitted with application and approved based on facility needs
- Travelers should consider hurricane season emergency assignments before accepting or extending contracts
