Job Opportunity: Labor and Delivery Nurse
Location: Folsom, California
Specialty: Family Birthing Center (Labor & Delivery, Mother/Baby)
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Requirements
- Experience:
- Minimum 2 years of Labor and Delivery nursing experience.
- Must have at least 1 year of LDRP (Labor, Delivery, Recovery, Postpartum) experience; 3 years preferred.
- Candidates with only postpartum experience will not be accepted unless they also have OR circulating experience.
- Licenses & Certifications:
- Active California RN License
- BLS (Basic Life Support)
- ACLS (Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support)
- NRP (Neonatal Resuscitation Program)
- AWHONN Advanced Fetal Monitoring
- References:
- Two supervisory references required (one within last 12 months, one within last 3 years).
- Other:
- Candidates must not have been employed by any facility associated with CommonSpirit (including CHI or Dignity) within the last 12 months.
- Must be comfortable with Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP) at delivery; no in-house pediatric coverage.
- Must be able to titrate drips such as Pitocin and occasionally insulin.
Unit & Patient Information
- Family Birthing Center with:
- 2 OB delivery beds
- 7 Labor/Delivery/Recovery/Postpartum (LDRP) beds
- 4-8 Overflow Postpartum beds
- 1 OR suite for C-sections
- NICU with 2 stabilization beds for newborns
- Approximately 70-80 births per month
- Antepartum NST testing averaging 60-70 per month
- Patient population includes pregnancies 35 weeks and above; preterm patients under 35 weeks are transferred to higher level care
- May include twin deliveries
- Follows AWHONN guidelines for nurse-to-patient ratios:
- Labor: 1 nurse to 2 patients, 1:1 during delivery
- Mother/Baby couplets: 1 nurse to 4 patients
Staffing & Support
- Charge Nurse or Nurse Shift Manager present on every shift (preferably not assigned a patient load unless staffing requires)
- No CNAs on unit; one OB Tech scheduled each shift
- OB physician in-house 24/7
- Perinatal specialist available to improve neonatal outcomes
- Anesthesia on-call 24/7 with 20-minute response time; anesthesia stays in-house if epidurals are in place
- Respiratory Therapist attends every delivery and manages respiratory equipment (ventilators, CPAP, bubble CPAP) as needed
- No Tele/Monitor Techs on unit; nurses monitor fetal heart rhythms using GE fetal monitors and must maintain ACLS certification
- Patients receiving general anesthesia are recovered in the Main PACU
Scheduling & Work Conditions
- 12-hour shifts
- Weekend requirement: 2 weekend shifts per 4-week schedule (Nights: Friday/Saturday; Days: Saturday/Sunday)
- Holiday shifts rotate with core staff
- May be placed on-call/standby during scheduled shifts with expectation to report within 30 minutes
- Floating required to other Sacramento area facilities
- Scheduling provided 4 weeks in advance
- First to float when needed
Summary
This is a travel contract opportunity for experienced Labor and Delivery nurses with strong LDRP skills, certifications, and the ability to manage high-acuity patients in a busy Family Birthing Center. Candidates must be comfortable with neonatal resuscitation, titrating drips, and working in a fast-paced environment with a multidisciplinary team. Prior travel experience is not explicitly required.
