Registered Nurse (Neuro Oncology) - Travel/Contract

Location: Kansas City, Missouri
Facility Type: Tertiary Care Hospital

Job Overview

  • Unit: Primary oncology unit treating all types of cancer in all phases of care (work-up to completion of therapy)
  • Patient Population: Uro-gyn and Gyn-onc surgical population (post-op care), step-down neuro overflow unit (strokes, head bleeds, neurological needs)
  • Ratios: 1:5
  • Experience Required: Minimum 2 years oncology experience required
  • First-timers accepted: Yes
  • Weekend Requirement: 8 weekend shifts per 6-week schedule period (combination of Friday/Saturday/Sunday)
  • Floating: Yes, within scope to all intermediate areas
  • Holiday shifts and Charge RN assignments as needed
  • Guaranteed Hours: 3 shifts per 13 weeks
  • Locals Accepted: No (home address must be at least 75 miles from facility)
  • Pending License Accepted: Yes
  • Return to Office Restrictions: No more than 7 days

Required Certifications

  • BLS (Basic Life Support)
  • Oncology experience required
  • Additional certifications may be required based on unit (e.g., ACLS, PALS, TNCC, NIH Stroke Certification)

Required Skills & Competencies

  • IV Therapy/Infusions: Administration of coagulation factors, antifungals, antivirals, blood/blood product administration, care and management of ports, central line blood draw, infusion pump management, intravenous medications (antibiotic, antiemetic, corticosteroids)
  • Oncologic Emergencies: Sepsis management
  • Psychosocial Care: Advanced directives, patient/family education and support
  • Symptom Management: Skin/mucous membrane alterations, altered mental status, constipation/diarrhea, dysphagia, edema, nausea/vomiting, neuropathy
  • Professional Knowledge: Chest tube care, colostomy care, Foley catheter management, isolation and neutropenic precautions, telemetry interpretation and monitoring, wound care
  • Pain Management: IV push narcotics, medication tolerance/dependence assessment, PCA pump management, transdermal patches
  • Surgery: Post-surgical care
  • Chemotherapy: Body fluid handling post-chemotherapy, oral administration, recognizing and communicating abnormal lab values
  • Radiation Therapy: Radiation safety precautions
  • Biotherapy: Recognize/manage side effects
  • Preferred Skills: Accessing ports, managing acute tumor lysis syndrome, anaphylaxis, extravasation injury, hemorrhage, hospice care, withholding/withdrawing treatment
  • Care of Patients With: Various cancers including bladder/kidney, brain, breast, colorectal, ENT, leukemia, liver, lung, lymphoma, melanoma, multiple myeloma, ovarian/uterine, pancreatic, prostate
  • Work Setting: Inpatient oncology

Compliance & Documentation Requirements

  • Government-issued ID required
  • Criminal background check within 6 months (7-year search including statewide, nationwide, and international if applicable)
  • Quarterly EPLS/GSA/SAM and HHS/OIG checks
  • Education verification of highest nursing degree required
  • State-specific background checks and registries as applicable
  • Drug testing within 1 year of start, must include specific panels and be valid throughout assignment
  • Physical exam within 1 year of start
  • Fit mask testing (N95) required and must be renewed annually
  • Immunizations and titers required or declinations accepted for:
    • Tetanus/Diphtheria/Tdap
    • TB testing (2 negative PPDs or equivalent)
    • Measles, Mumps, Rubella (MMR)
    • Varicella
    • Flu vaccination or approved exemption during flu season
  • Unit-specific competency exams including oncology competency exam
  • Skills checklist within 1 year of start, oncology skills required
  • Various facility-specific documents including HIPAA acknowledgement, confidentiality form, latex allergy questionnaire, hand hygiene, dress code, and fingernail policies must be reviewed and signed prior to start

  • Two professional references required (supervisors preferred)

  • Performance evaluations may be requested but not mandatory for extensions or per diem

This position is ideal for experienced oncology RNs comfortable with complex inpatient oncology care, chemotherapy administration, and neurological step-down care in a high-acuity, teaching hospital environment.
