Registered Nurse (Outpatient General Surgery Clinic) - Roanoke, Virginia

Employment Type: Travel/Contract
Contract Length: 13 weeks


Position Overview

  • Outpatient RN role supporting a General Surgery Clinic.
  • Patient population includes general surgery cases such as oncology, endocrine, hernia, gallbladder, colon, pancreas, appendix, emergency general surgery, and more.
  • Support includes excision assistance to surgeons or APPs, wound care, lump/bump biopsies, and other related procedures.

Schedule & Work Details

  • Shift: Monday to Friday, 5 shifts per week, 8 hours each (8:00 AM - 4:30 PM)
  • Charting system: EPIC experience required
  • Call-off policy: Facility may call off 1 shift every 2 weeks
  • First-time travelers accepted
  • Local candidates not accepted

Required Licenses & Certifications

  • Active Virginia State or Compact RN/LPN license required (pending license accepted only if single-state non-compact license held)
  • BLS (Basic Life Support) certification required (AHA only)
  • ACLS, PALS, NRP, TNCC certifications as applicable by unit
  • State License primary source verification within 30 days of start
  • NURSYS verification required for all RNs within 30 days of start

Required Clinical Skills & Experience

  • Experience in Family Care clinic, Internal Medicine, or Urgent Care settings preferred
  • Skills include:
    • Interpretation of lab results
    • Medication reconciliation
    • Patient health history, allergies, and vital signs assessment
    • Dressing changes and aseptic/sterile procedure setup
    • Specimen collection (capillary, throat, urine, phlebotomy)
  • Ability to support general surgery patients and assist with special procedures

Background & Compliance Requirements

  • 7-year background check required within 1 year of start (covering all locations lived/worked)
  • EPLS/GSA/SAM and HHS/OIG checks required within 30 days of start and updated for renewals
  • Education verification of highest earned degree required
  • Drug screening: Negative 10-panel drug screen within 30 days of start
  • Physical exam within 1 year confirming freedom from communicable diseases
  • Fit test within 1 year, updated annually (not required for students)
  • Negative TB test or chest X-ray within 1 year, updated annually
  • Required immunizations or positive titers: Measles, Mumps, Rubella, Hepatitis B, Varicella
  • Flu vaccination or mask/declination form during flu season

Documentation & Onboarding

  • I9 or attestation required
  • Valid Driver’s License/State ID required within 48 hours of signing (address must be >100 miles from facility)
  • E-Verify or attestation required
  • Residency declaration form if working on a compact license
  • Photo for badge (professional, plain background)
  • Completion of new hire paperwork and compliance checklists prior to start
  • Orientation manual review required prior to start (not required for inpatient RNs)
  • References: 2 clinical references required
  • Skills checklist updated annually
  • Employment application/resume required

Additional Notes

  • Candidates must comply with facility-specific access and confidentiality agreements.
  • VA State Police Search completed onsite first day for home health and hospice candidates.
  • Medication and competency exams required as applicable by profession/specialty.
  • Crisis Prevention Institute (CPI) certification required for Behavioral Health roles.
