Registered Nurse (RN) - General Medicine PCU
Location: Roanoke, Virginia
Employment Type: Travel/Contract
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Shift & Scheduling Details
- Shift Hours: 3x12 hour shifts (6:45 AM - 7:15 PM)
- 4x12 shifts available upon request
- Weekend Requirement: Every other weekend or 6 weekend shifts in a 6-week block
- Holiday Requirement: Must work one holiday per 13-week contract
- Call-off Policy: Facility may call off 1 shift per 2 weeks
- Accepts first-time travelers
- Locals accepted within radius rule
- Pending license accepted if holding a single-state license from a non-compact state; otherwise, active Virginia State or Compact RN/LPN license required
Required Certifications
- ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support)
- BLS (Basic Life Support)
- NIHSS (National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale)
Required Clinical Skills & Experience
- Experience in Telemetry, PCU, DOU, IMC, and stepdown units
- Proficient in cardiac monitoring, emergency response, dysrhythmia management, use of Rapid Response and Code teams
- Administration of cardiac drips (Cardizem, Heparin, Insulin, low-dose dopamine/dobutamine, Amiodarone, Nitro, Bumex, Lasix) with no titration
- IV therapy, phlebotomy, blood product administration, central/peripheral line care
- Competency in chest tubes, trach care, PICC line management, medication administration
- Respiratory skills including nasal cannula, oxygen administration, CPAP, BiPAP, and non-invasive airway management
Unit Details
- Patient-to-nurse ratio: 4:1 goal, typically 5:1
- 25-bed Medical Unit specializing in care of acutely and chronically ill adults with complex medical diagnoses
- Telemetry monitors are remote but located on the unit; tele-sitting support available
- Floating required within skillset to other PCUs and possibly Medical-Surgical units
Licensure & Background Requirements
- Active Virginia RN license or Compact RN license required
- Background check covering 7 years of history required within 1 year of start
- Education verification of highest earned degree required
- Drug screening: Negative 10-panel drug screen within 30 days of start
- Physical exam within 1 year of start, free from communicable diseases
- Fit test within 1 year of start, updated annually
- Negative TB test or chest X-ray within 1 year, updated annually
- Required immunizations or titers: Measles, Mumps, Rubella, Hepatitis B, Varicella
- E-Verify or attestation required
Additional Requirements
- I9 or attestation required
- Valid Driver’s License/State ID required within 48 hours of signing (must meet radius criteria)
- Completion of facility-specific compliance and confidentiality agreements
- Completion of new hire paperwork prior to start
- Photo for badge required (professional, plain background)
- Orientation Safety Manual review prior to start (not required for inpatient RNs as of 7/10/23)
- Medication and competency exams as applicable
- 2 clinical references required
- Complete application/resume required
- Skills checklist updated annually
Prior Travel Experience
- Not required; first-time travelers are accepted
