Description

Job Opportunity: Registered Nurse (RN) – General Medicine PCU (Vent Experience Required)

Location: Roanoke, Virginia
Employment Type: Travel/Contract
Contract Length: 13 weeks


Shift & Scheduling Details

  • Shift: 3x12 hour night shifts (6:45 PM – 7:15 AM)
  • Weekend Requirement: Every other weekend or 6 weekend shifts in a 6-week block
  • Holiday Requirement: Must work one holiday per 13-week contract
  • Call-off Policy: Allowed 1 call-off shift per 2 weeks
  • Charting System: EPIC experience required
  • Floating: Required to float within skillset

Required Certifications

  • ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support)
  • BLS (Basic Life Support)
  • NIHSS (National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale)

Required Clinical Skills

  • Cardiac monitoring, emergency response, dysrhythmia interpretation/management
  • IV therapy, phlebotomy, blood product administration, central/peripheral line care
  • Medication administration including cardiac drips (no titration)
  • Respiratory support: nasal cannula, oxygen administration, non-invasive airway management
  • Ventilator care for chronic trach and vent patients
  • Rapid Response and Code team activation
  • Isolation precautions and telemetry settings across PCU, DOU, IMC, and stepdown units

Unit Details

  • Nurse-to-patient ratio: Typically 1:5
  • Hybrid unit: 10 PCU beds and 2 ICU beds
  • Patient population includes vent/trach dependent patients
  • Common diagnoses: DKA, COPD, Sepsis, Suicide/Overdose, Chronic respiratory failure, renal failure
  • 2 beds dedicated for chronic trach patients
  • Remote telemetry with tele-sitting to increase Patient Care Tech coverage

Licensure & Experience Requirements

  • Active Virginia State or Compact RN/LPN license required (pending license accepted only if holding a single-state license from a non-compact state)
  • Prior travel experience: Not required (first-time travelers accepted)
  • Specialty years of experience: Not explicitly stated (assume minimum RN experience)

  • Driver’s License/State ID required within 48 hours of signing (must meet radius criteria)
  • Background check: 7-year check required within 1 year of start
