Job Opportunity: Registered Nurse (RN) - Labor & Delivery (L&D)
Location: Lees Summit, Missouri
Employment Type: Travel/Contract
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Job Summary
Seeking an experienced Registered Nurse for Labor & Delivery with postpartum care responsibilities. The unit includes L&D and postpartum in the same physical space, with a focus on antepartum and intrapartum patients. The role involves 1:1 nurse-to-patient ratios during labor, with flexibility based on patient acuity.
Required Experience
- Minimum 3 years of RN experience in Labor & Delivery (highest required)
- First-time travelers not accepted
- Prior travel experience not explicitly required
Work Schedule & Requirements
- Weekend shifts: 4-5 weekend shifts per 6-week schedule (Friday-Saturday nights for night shift; Saturday-Sunday for day shift)
- Additional minimum: 2 Sunday night shifts and 2 Friday day shifts per 6-week schedule
- On-call: 2 on-call shifts per 6-week schedule
- Floating: May float within scope to postpartum unit for couplet care or postpartum mom care only
- Local candidates not accepted (must live at least 75 miles from facility)
- Return to Office (RTO) restrictions: No more than 7 days
- Guaranteed hours: 3 shifts per 13 weeks
Certifications Required
- BLS (Basic Life Support)
- FHM (Fetal Heart Monitoring)
- NRP (Neonatal Resuscitation Program)
- Additional certifications may be required based on unit specifics (e.g., ACLS, PALS, TNCC, CPI)
Skills & Clinical Competencies
- Antepartum and Labor & Delivery (low risk)
- Facility births experience (100-300 births/month)
- Sterile vaginal exams and triage of obstetrical patients
- Use of Electronic Fetal Monitoring (EFM), including external and internal fetal monitoring, spiral electrode placement, and intrauterine pressure catheter (IUPC)
- Management of obstetrical complications including: asthma, diabetes mellitus, HELLP syndrome, infectious diseases, malpresentations, multiple gestation, pre-eclampsia/eclampsia, premature rupture of membranes, preterm labor, RH incompatibilities, VBAC management
- Use of rapid response/code teams and telemetry interpretation
- Administration of blood and blood products
- IV therapy skills including starting/maintaining IVs and infusion pumps
- Medication administration including antiseizure, antihypertensives, insulin drips, magnesium sulfate, Pitocin, prostaglandins, terbutaline, amnioinfusion
- Assistance with high-risk deliveries, vaginal deliveries, C-sections, forceps/vacuum extraction, hemorrhage/shock management, postpartum hemorrhage
- Neonatal resuscitation and care including radiant warmers and thermoregulation
- Pain management including epidural anesthesia, general anesthesia, opioids, PCA use
- Breastfeeding and lactation support
- Postpartum care including episiotomy/incisional care, Foley catheter management, fundus/lochia/perineum care, wound assessment
- Infection control and isolation precautions, vaccine administration
Unit & Patient Details
- L&D unit: 11 labor rooms, 5 triage rooms (agency staff not required to work OB triage)
- Postpartum unit: 15 rooms plus 2 flex rooms for labor or postpartum patients
- Postpartum and post-op GYN patients cared for in postpartum unit
- Patient assignments based on acuity per AWHONN staffing standards
- Nurse-to-patient ratio typically 1:1 in L&D, may be 1:2 or 1:3 for antepartum or cervical ripening patients
Licensure & Compliance
- Pending licenses accepted
- Missouri RN license required (primary source verification via NURSYS)
- Government-issued ID required
- Background checks including criminal, statewide, nationwide, and international (if applicable)
- Drug testing within 1 year of start, must include full panel and be current throughout assignment
- Physical exam within 1 year of start
- Fit mask (N95) testing required and must be renewed annually
- Immunizations and titers required: Tdap, TB testing, MMR (measles, mumps, rubella), varicella, flu vaccination or exemption
- Unit-specific competency exams and medication/pharmacology competency required
- Various facility-specific documents and policies must be reviewed and signed prior to start (e.g., HIPAA, dress code, hand hygiene, latex allergy questionnaire)
Additional Notes
- Agency staff with LDRP (Labor, Delivery, Recovery, Postpartum) experience preferred but LD/LDR experience considered
- Must be able to work within the scope of practice and float as needed
- Compliance with all facility and state-specific requirements is mandatory
