Registered Nurse (RN) - Travel/Contract Position
Location: Roanoke, Virginia
Specialty: ICU/PCU/MS Float (Intensive Care Unit, Progressive Care Unit, Medical-Surgical)
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Job Overview
- Must be comfortable working across all three units: ICU, PCU, and Medical-Surgical.
- Experience working with patient ratios of at least 1:5 required.
- Floating between units may occur 2-3 times per shift (every 4 hours).
- Weekend shifts required: either every other weekend or 6 weekend shifts in a 6-week block.
- Must work at least one holiday per 13-week contract.
- First-time travelers are accepted.
- Pending license accepted only if holding a single-state license from a non-compact state; otherwise, an active Virginia State or Compact RN/LPN license is required.
- Scheduling requests (RTO, block, special) must be submitted upfront.
- Facility may call off 1 shift per 2 weeks.
Required Certifications
- ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support)
- BLS (Basic Life Support)
- NIHSS (National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale)
Required Clinical Skills & Experience
- Minimum 2 years ICU experience at a large Level 1 or Level 2 trauma facility.
- Proficient in:
- IV therapy, phlebotomy, arterial line and central line management, blood product administration
- Management of BiPAP/CPAP, ventilated patient care, suctioning (ETT, NT)
- Cardiac monitoring, dysrhythmia interpretation and management, titrating cardiac drips
- Responding to emergencies via Rapid Response/Code teams
- Managing continuous IV sedation, emergency medications, titrating cardiac/vasoactive drips, IV insulin protocols
Unit Details & Patient Ratios
- ICU average ratio: 2:1
- PCU average ratio: 5:1
- Medical-Surgical average ratio: 6:1 (may flex up to 7:1)
Scheduling & Shift Details
- Typical shifts: 3x12 hour shifts (6:45 PM - 7:15 AM)
- Option for 4x12 hour shifts available upon request
- Contract length options range from 13 to 52 weeks
Electronic Health Record System
- EPIC experience required
Additional Requirements
- 2 clinical references required (hospital evaluations accepted)
- Complete application/resume required
- Skills checklist must be updated annually
Health & Background Requirements
- Physical exam within 1 year, confirming freedom from communicable diseases
- Negative TB test or chest X-ray within 1 year (updated annually)
- Required immunizations or positive titers for:
- Rubeola (Measles)
- Mumps
- Rubella
- Hepatitis B
- Varicella
- Negative 10-panel drug screen within 30 days of start
- Fit test within 1 year, updated annually (not required for students)
- Seasonal flu vaccination or mask/declination form during flu season
- 7-year background check required within 1 year of start
- EPLS/GSA/SAM and HHS/OIG checks required within 30 days of start and updated for renewals
- State license primary source verification and NURSYS verification required within 30 days of start
Prior Travel Experience
- Prior travel experience is not required; first-time travelers are accepted.
Notes
- Must be comfortable working all ICU, PCU, and Medical-Surgical units.
- Floating between units is frequent and based on staffing needs.
- Weekend and holiday work is mandatory.
- Facility enforces a radius rule based on driver's license address (within 100 miles).
- All scheduling and time-off requests must be submitted with application.
This position offers a dynamic float role requiring strong critical care skills and flexibility across multiple units in a Level I Trauma Center environment.
