    Description

    Registered Nurse Travel/Contract Position

    Location: La Jolla, California
    Contract Length: 13 weeks


    Job Description

    • Position is in a Perinatal Float Pool.
    • Nurse must be cross-trained and rotate among all three perinatal units: Labor & Delivery (L&D), Postpartum, and LDRP.
    • Hard requirement: Minimum of 2 years combined experience in L&D and Postpartum with demonstrated competency in both areas.
    • Must be available to work one additional overtime shift every 2 weeks (7 shifts total), with at least 2 weeks’ notice for schedule changes.

    Required Experience

    • Minimum 2 years of combined L&D and Postpartum nursing experience.
    • No explicit requirement for prior travel experience mentioned.

    Certifications Required

    • BLS (Basic Life Support) – required for all RNs.
    • NRP (Neonatal Resuscitation Program) – required for RNs working in L&D and Mother-Baby Postpartum units.
    • EFM (Electronic Fetal Monitoring) – Intermediate or Advanced EFM certification (AWHONN) required for RNs working in L&D; must be renewed every 2 years.
    • ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support) – may be required depending on unit assignment; verify with unit job description.
    • Other certifications may be required depending on unit; verify with unit job description.

    Background and Compliance Requirements

    • Background checks must be current within 6 months and include:
      • SSN trace with all aliases
      • County, national, sexual offender, and DMV checks (if driving)
      • International background checks if applicable
    • Criminal history restrictions apply (e.g., no DUI within last 5 years if driving).
    • Licensure must be clean and active; probationary licenses are not accepted.

    Health and Immunization Requirements

    • Physical exam within 1 year of start; must be updated if break in service >30 days.
    • Fit mask test (N95 or equivalent) required and must be updated annually. Float Pool RNs must have passed fit test prior to orientation day 1.
    • Immunizations and titers required:
      • Tdap (within 10 years) or titer + declination if vaccine refused
      • Negative TB test or chest X-ray within 3 months of start
      • Annual TB questionnaire
      • Measles (Rubeola), Mumps, Rubella – positive titer or 2 vaccines
      • Hepatitis B – proof of vaccination and/or titer or signed declination
      • Varicella – positive titer or 2 vaccines
      • Seasonal flu vaccine strongly preferred during flu season (Nov 1 – Mar 31); declination forms required if declined
      • COVID-19: Single dose of bivalent or current seasonal vaccine or declination required as of 3/13/2025
    • 9 Panel Drug Screen within 30 days of start; must be updated if break in service >30 days.

    Competency Requirements

    • Medication/Pharmacology competency exam with passing score of 80% or higher.
    • Color blindness testing (online acceptable).
    • General competency exam for clinical positions with passing score of 80% or higher.

    References

    • Two references required covering employment within the past 2 years in the current specialty.
    • For travel/per diem:
      • Preferably one reference from a manager/supervisor/director and one from a Charge RN who directly supervised the candidate.
      • If manager reference unavailable, two Charge RN references who directly supervised are acceptable.

    Additional Notes

    • Orientation and facility-specific modules may be required, especially for per diem candidates.
    • Must comply with all UCSD Health policies and procedures.

    This position is ideal for experienced perinatal nurses with strong skills in both L&D and Postpartum care, who are flexible and able to float across multiple units within the perinatal service line.
