Description

Registered Nurse (PCU - Medical-Renal)

Location: Roanoke, Virginia
Employment Type: Travel/Contract
Contract Length: 13 weeks


Shift & Scheduling Details

  • Shift: 3x12 hour night shifts (6:45 PM - 7:15 AM)
  • 4x12 hour shifts available upon request
  • Weekend Requirement: Every other weekend or 6 weekend shifts in a 6-week block
  • Must work one holiday per 13-week contract
  • Facility may call off 1 shift per 2 weeks
  • Accepts first-time travelers and local candidates within radius
  • Pending license accepted only if holding a single-state license from a non-compact state; otherwise, active Virginia State or Compact RN/LPN license required

Required Certifications

  • ACLS (AHA only)
  • BLS (AHA only)
  • NIH Stroke Certification
  • Other certifications may apply depending on unit (e.g., PALS, NRP, TNCC)

Required Clinical Skills

  • Cardiac: Monitoring, emergency response, dysrhythmia management, cardiac drip management (without titration)
  • IV/Line: IV therapy, phlebotomy, blood product administration, central and peripheral line care
  • Respiratory: Oxygen administration via nasal cannula, non-invasive airway management
  • Rapid Response/Isolation: Use of rapid response and code teams, isolation precautions
  • Experience in PCU/DOU/IMC/Stepdown settings required

Unit Details

  • Nurse-to-patient ratio: 1:5
  • Patient population: Adults and geriatrics, including chronic vent patients
  • Specialty: Hospitalist Medicine patients with renal and other medical diagnoses
  • Unit also serves gastrointestinal, pulmonary, and surgical/procedural patients
  • Floating within skillset required

Experience Requirements

  • Specialty: Registered Nurse (PCU/Medical-Renal)
  • Years of Experience: Not explicitly stated; assume minimum 1+ years in specialty or higher based on clinical skills and setting
  • Prior travel experience: Not required; first-time travelers accepted

Licensing & Documentation Requirements

  • Active Virginia RN or Compact license preferred; pending license accepted under specific conditions
  • I-9 or attestation required
  • Driver’s License/State ID required within 48 hours of signing (must meet radius rule)
  • Background check: 7-year history required within 1 year of start
  • E-Verify and other federal background checks required
  • Education verification and transcript/diploma required
  • Physical exam within 1 year, free from communicable diseases
  • Fit testing within 1 year, updated annually
  • Negative TB test or chest X-ray within 1 year, updated annually
  • Drug screening: Negative 10-panel within 30 days of start
  • Immunizations: Measles, Mumps, Rubella, Hepatitis B, Varicella (positive titer or vaccination)
  • Flu vaccination or mask/declination form during flu season

Additional Requirements

  • Epic charting experience required
  • Must complete facility-specific orientation and compliance paperwork prior to start
  • Two clinical references required
  • Skills checklist updated annually
