Description
Job Opportunity: RN - Labor & Delivery (Travel)
Location: Chattanooga, Tennessee
Employment Type: Travel Contract
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Unit Overview
- Labor & Delivery unit with:
- 9 labor rooms
- 6 triage rooms
- 3 antepartum (AP) rooms
- 3 operating rooms (ORs)
- Patient Ratios:
- 1:1-2 for laboring patients
- 1:2-3 for antepartum
- 1:1 for cesarean section (C/S) and PACU
- Staffing includes OB tech for C/S assistance, dedicated charge nurse for triage and transport, and unit secretary (7 AM - 11 PM)
- Possible floating to Mother Baby unit, but not frequently; no floating to other departments
- Documentation systems used: Meditech and Centricity
- Scheduling: 3 shifts per week; working 1-2 days or evenings required during winter holidays
Required Qualifications
- Specialty: Labor & Delivery
- Experience: Minimum 2 years L&D experience (higher value from description)
- Prior Travel Experience: Preferred to have completed 1 or more travel contracts in L&D
- Certifications:
- AWHONN Intermediate Fetal Heart Monitoring
- Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP)
- Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS)
- Basic Life Support (BLS)
Skills & Procedures
- Advanced skills: NRP, ACLS, BLS, AWHONN intermediate fetal monitoring
- Procedures performed on unit:
- Cervical exams
- Intrauterine pressure catheter (IUPC) and fetal scalp electrode (FSE) placement
- Vaginal deliveries
- IV starts with lab draws
- Circulating in cesarean sections
- Recovery care for cesarean sections (mostly spinal anesthesia, occasionally general anesthesia)

- Collaboration with a laborist program providing 24-hour MD and Certified Nurse Midwife (CNM) coverage
- Dedicated anesthesia providers available 24/7
- First hospital in Chattanooga to offer nitrous oxide therapy for pain management alongside epidurals
- Recently renovated labor & delivery and mother-baby units, including six new state-of-the-art mother-baby rooms
- Use of advanced tools such as Jada, fetal pillow, and Cook's catheters
- Most nursing staff have completed Spinning Babies or Supporting Vaginal Birth classes to improve patient care and outcomes
Dress Code
- Required uniform: Black, grey, or pink solid-color scrubs (no patterns)
- No sweatshirts or t-shirts allowed
