Job Opportunity: SICU Registered Nurse (Travel/Contract)

Location: Fredericksburg, Virginia

Job Description

  • Work in the Surgical Intensive Care Unit (SICU) caring for a specialized patient population including trauma, cardiovascular surgery (TAVRs, CABGs), neurosurgery, and other complex surgical patients.
  • Patient diagnoses include acute ventilator needs, COVID+ with high oxygen demand, DKA, severe sepsis, unstable GI bleed, trauma cases, open heart recovery, TAVR recovery, post-code blue, multi-system organ failure, and need for CRRT.
  • Nurse-to-patient ratios: 1:2-3 in SICU; if floating to step-down unit, ratios may be 1:3-4. Ratios adjusted based on skill level and acuity.
  • Floating within scope to meet facility needs is required.
  • Weekend shifts required every other weekend.
  • No on-call required.
  • Travel pairs are NOT allowed on this unit.
  • First-time travelers accepted.
  • Local candidates accepted.
  • No block scheduling accommodations.
  • No holiday requests off (RTO) will be approved; RTO restrictions at manager’s discretion.

Required Qualifications

  • Licensure: Valid Virginia or compact nursing license.
  • Certifications:
    • ACLS (AHA provider card required)
    • NIH Stroke Certification
  • Experience: Minimum 2 years of RN experience in specialty (SICU or critical care).
  • Skills:
    • Mandatory: CRRT (Continuous Renal Replacement Therapy) experience.
    • Preferred: IABP, Impella, Prismax CRRT, and EVD Drain skills (manager prefers at least one additional skill beyond CRRT).
    • Competency in interpretation and management of dysrhythmias, arterial line management, blood product administration.

Required Documentation & Compliance

  • Background checks including lifetime criminal, education verification, and federal/state registries.
  • Primary source verification of licensure and certifications.
  • Physical exam within 1 year prior to start.
  • Drug testing within 30 days prior to start.
  • Immunizations and titers: Measles, Mumps, Rubella, Varicella, Hepatitis B (with options for boosters or declinations).
  • TB testing or chest X-ray as applicable.
  • Fit mask (N95) certification required and must be updated annually.
  • Flu vaccination documentation required during flu season (medical/religious exemptions accepted).
  • COVID vaccination documentation required or declination on file.
  • Competency exams including medication/pharmacology test and color blindness test.
  • Facility-specific documents including code of conduct, confidentiality agreement, Epic experience screening, orientation packet, and job description acknowledgment.
  • References: Two required within the last 2 years, including one from current year, from supervisors or equivalent.
  • Work history verification for at least 2 years.

Additional Notes

  • No prior travel experience is explicitly required for this position.
  • Candidates must be prepared to complete mandatory facility orientation modules and exams prior to start.
  • The unit does not allow travel pairs.
  • Floating to other units within scope is expected.

This position is ideal for experienced SICU RNs with CRRT skills looking for a 13-week travel assignment in a Level II Trauma Center environment.
