Job Opportunity: ER RN in Phoenix, Arizona
Position Overview
- Specialty: ER RN
- Location: Phoenix, Arizona
- Contract Length: 13 weeks (minimum contract length)
- Unit: Emergency Department / Trauma
- Patient Volume: Approximately 250-300 patients per day, 88,000 patients per year
- Unit Size: Acute - 36 beds, Subacute - 54 beds, Trauma bays - 6 (no travelers assigned here)
- Trauma Level: Level 1 Trauma Center
- Hospital Type: Teaching hospital with nursing students
Required Qualifications
- Experience:
- Minimum 2 years of ER experience
- At least 6 months of Level 1 Trauma experience
- Level 1 Trauma and teaching experience required
- Certifications:
- BLS (Basic Life Support)
- ACLS (Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support)
- PALS (Pediatric Advanced Life Support) — ENPC will NOT substitute for PALS
- Preferred: TNCC (Trauma Nursing Core Course) and ATCN (Advanced Trauma Care for Nurses)
- EMR Experience: Cerner EMR required for ED
- Prior Travel Experience: Required for ED and Neuro ICU
- Other Requirements:
- Prophecy Dysrhythmia Exam required 24-48 hours prior to acceptance (max 2 attempts; failure results in 6-month disqualification in region)
- Must have own vehicle (travel teams)
- No facial piercings and only natural hair colors allowed
- Men must be clean-shaven for fit testing
- Pass/fail exam on Day 1 of orientation
- SIMs Lab competency required for Foley catheter insertion and central line dressing changes (pass/fail)
- Must be competent in sterile field maintenance
- Float policy: Can float between 4 nearby facilities within about 30 minutes apart, including main and satellite ERs
Work Environment & Details
- Shift Details:
- 12-hour night shifts available
- Weekend requirement: 4 weekend shifts per 4 weeks (unit discretion)
- Patient Ratios: 1:4 nurse-to-patient ratio
- Charge Nurses: 2 charge RNs with light or task-oriented patient loads
- Support Staff: 4 Patient Care Technicians (PCTs) for sitter duties
- Monitoring Equipment: Phillips telemetry monitors; ability to read strips required
- Ventilator Management: Respiratory Therapists (RT) manage vents 24/7
- In-House Providers: Minimum 2 MDs (hospitalists or intensivists), midlevels, anesthesia
- Pharmacy: Pharmacist available in ER 10 hours/day
- Orientation: 2-3 shifts of floor-specific orientation
- Common Diagnoses: Trauma, burns; pediatric patients transferred out
- Additional Notes:
- Approximately 30-40 psychiatric holds
- Float only within ER units

- Weekly orientations on Mondays (except holidays)
- Candidates cannot hold multiple contracts simultaneously within this system
- Must have been off permanent staff at this system for 12 months to be eligible for travel assignment
- Strict grooming and appearance policies enforced
- 50-mile radius rule applies for candidate submissions
- Day 1 pass/fail exam with study guide provided
- Parking assigned with shuttle service to facility; night shift parking in garage
This position is ideal for experienced ER RNs with trauma and teaching experience who meet the certification and travel requirements and are comfortable working in a high-volume, Level 1 trauma teaching hospital environment.
