Registered Nurse (Float - Nursing Resource Team)

Location: Coeur d'Alene, Idaho
Employment Type: Contract Clinician
Contract Length: 13 weeks


Job Overview

This position is part of a hospital-wide Nursing Resource Team (NRT) that floats across multiple units including Emergency Room (ER), Intensive Care Unit (ICU), Progressive Care Unit (PCU), Medical-Surgical (Med Surg), and Behavioral Health (Adult Acute, Youth Acute, Addiction Recovery). The role requires flexibility, strong time management, and the ability to work with diverse patient populations and interdisciplinary teams.


Key Responsibilities

  • Provide nursing care across various units: ER, ICU, PCU, Med Surg, Behavioral Health, and Addiction Recovery.
  • Evaluate, plan, implement, and document nursing care for assigned patients.
  • Assist physicians during examinations and procedures.
  • Perform patient tests and administer medications within RN scope of practice.
  • Promote patient independence through education on conditions, medications, and self-care.
  • Maintain adaptability to float mid-shift if needed.
  • Adhere to nursing standards, patient care protocols, and the Idaho Nurse Practice Act.
  • Engage in relationship-based, culturally competent care with patients and families.
  • Use clinical data and technology to improve care outcomes and support decision-making.

Required Qualifications

  • Experience: Minimum of 3 years of nursing experience in all of the following areas (can be concurrent):
    • Emergency Room (ER)
    • Intensive Care Unit (ICU) (experience must be within the last 2 years)
    • Progressive Care Unit (PCU)
    • Medical-Surgical (Med Surg)
    • Behavioral Health/Psych (adult acute, youth acute, addiction recovery)
  • Experience with cardiac drips and non-invasive ventilation.
  • Graduate of a nationally accredited nursing program (BSN highly preferred).
  • Current Registered Nurse (RN) license in Idaho or compact state.
  • Certifications:
    • Basic Life Support (BLS) - AHA
    • Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) - AHA
    • NIH Stroke Scale (NIHSS)
    • Restraint C (can be completed during orientation)
    • MOAB 8-hour class (covered during orientation)
    • Boundaries 1-hour module (covered during orientation)
  • Department of Health & Welfare Background Fingerprinting required due to Behavioral Health floating.

Schedule & Shift Details

  • 12-hour shifts: 0700-1930 or 1900-0730.
  • Schedule varies based on unit needs.
  • Every other weekend required.
  • Nurses receive unit assignment 2 hours prior to shift start.
  • Floating to different units is expected and may occur mid-shift.

Unit Details

  • Bed size varies by unit: 21-35 beds.
  • Nurse-to-patient ratios:
    • ICU: 1:1-2
    • Med Surg & ED boarded Med Surg: 1:5-6
    • PCU: 1:3-4
    • Behavioral Health (Adult/Youth Acute, Addiction Recovery): 1:5-6 days / 1:10 overnight
  • Majority of time likely spent in Med Surg and Behavioral Health units, with required ability to float to ER and ICU.

Dress Code

  • Navy blue scrubs.

Additional Notes

  • Prior travel experience is not explicitly required.
  • Must be able to meet age-specific needs of assigned units.
  • Competency with restraint boards and lifts will be covered during onboarding.

This role is ideal for an experienced RN comfortable with a variety of acute care settings and flexible floating assignments across multiple specialty areas.
