Description
Registered Nurse (RN) – Pediatrics / MST Unit
Location: Prescott Valley, Arizona
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Unit Overview
- Mixed unit caring for both adult and pediatric patients; patient ratio varies and may include more adults at times.
- Float to the MST unit on Emergency Care to care for adult MST patients if pediatric/MST census drops.
- Unit size: 10 beds
- Patient Ratios:
- Pediatrics: 1:3-4
- MST (Medical-Surgical-Telemetry adults): 1:5
Patient Population & Common Diagnoses
- Surgical: total hip & knee replacement, small bowel resection, hysterectomy, exploratory laparoscopy
- Medical: MRSA, C-diff infections, COPD, pneumonia, COVID-19
- Telemetry: chest pain
- Pediatrics: respiratory illnesses (RSV, Influenza, COVID), chronic seizures
- Other: dehydration, appendectomy, failure to thrive (med surg level pediatric patients)
- No feeding tubes, tracheostomies, or ventilators on unit; assist with stabilization for transfer if needed
Required Certifications & Exams
- BLS, ACLS, PALS certifications required
- Must take and pass a dysrhythmia exam with a minimum score of 80% within two attempts prior to contract signing
- Failure to pass results in a 6-month disqualification from assignments in Arizona and Sacramento
Experience & Skills
- Experience working with children is required
- Must be willing and able to care for adult patients as well
- Strong nursing skills preferred, as permanent staff may include less experienced nurses (e.g., new grads or nurses returning to acute care)
- No requirement for RNs to titrate drips on this unit
Staffing & Support
- Charge Nurse oversees 50 inpatient beds including MST, Pediatrics, and an Acuity Adaptable MCU unit
- Nurse Aides typically care for 10 patients; if no aide, RN cares for 3 patients and provides primary care
- Remote Monitor Techs available for adult MST telemetry patients; RNs must be able to read telemetry strips
- Pediatric patients monitored with bedside monitors
Equipment & Procedures
- Administer high flow oxygen to stabilize patients for transfer
- Care for stable adult patients requiring BiPAP for chronic conditions
Scheduling & Work Requirements
- 12-hour shifts: 7:00 AM – 7:00 PM or 7:30 PM – 7:30 AM
- Weekend requirement: every other weekend (Friday & Saturday nights; Saturday & Sunday days)
- Holiday rotation to distribute holidays fairly
- Standby/call rotation during low census periods
Floating & Cross-Training
- Float to MCU or MST units to care for adult MST patients
- Cross-train and float to birthing unit to care for mom-baby couplets
- Float to Labor and Delivery if experienced in that area
- No floating to west campus
Dress Code & Orientation
- Scrub color: Navy
- Orientation includes hospital and unit-specific training based on experience
Additional Notes
- Radius rule: candidates must not have worked full time, part time, or PRN within the past year at any facility associated with certain large healthcare systems within 50 miles
Required Qualifications
- Registered Nurse (RN) license
- BLS, ACLS, PALS certifications
- Experience caring for pediatric and adult patients in a mixed medical-surgical-telemetry unit
- Ability to pass dysrhythmia exam prior to contract start
This position requires flexibility to care for both pediatric and adult patients in a dynamic, mixed unit environment.
