Description

Registered Nurse - Coronary Care ICU

Location: Phoenix, Arizona
Specialty: Coronary Care ICU (CVICU/CTICU)
Contract Length: 13 weeks (minimum)


Job Summary

Seeking an experienced RN for a high-acuity Coronary Care ICU unit with a focus on cardiac surgery recovery and advanced cardiac support. This is a teaching hospital environment with a 24-bed CVICU/CTICU unit.


Unit Details

  • Unit size: 24 beds
  • Patient ratio: 1:1 to 1:2 (high number of 1:1 assignments)
  • Shift hours: 7am - 7pm (12-hour night shifts also available)
  • Weekend requirement: 3 weekend shifts per 4-week schedule (4 total weekend shifts for nights)
  • Holidays: Scheduled into rotation based on unit coverage
  • Float: Required to float to other ICUs, telemetry units (4:1 ratio), and a secondary campus if requested
  • Charge nurse role available (no patient assignment)
  • Nurse aides: 2 patient care techs on days and nights with high census
  • EMR system: Cerner
  • Telemetry system: Phillips
  • In-house intensivist coverage during the day; on-call at night
  • Respiratory therapy and pharmacy available 24/7

Patient Population / Common Diagnoses

  • Cardiac surgery recovery (CABG, TAVR)
  • Mechanical circulatory support (IABP, ECMO)
  • Continuous renal replacement therapy (CRRT)
  • Lung, thoracic, esophageal, and other transplant patients
  • Bronchoscopy, Swan-Ganz catheter, epidural management
  • High number of bedside procedures

Required Certifications & Experience

  • Current RN license
  • BLS and ACLS certification required
  • CCRN certification preferred
  • Minimum 2 years of ICU experience in specialty (CVICU preferred)
  • Level 1 trauma experience required
  • Prior travel experience required for some ICU specialties (ED, Neuro ICU) — confirm if applicable
  • Must pass a Prophecy Dysrhythmia Exam within 24-48 hours prior to acceptance (max 2 attempts)
  • Must pass a Day 1 pass/fail SIMs Lab (skills include Foley catheter insertion and central line dressing changes)
  • Strong IV skills required (no dedicated IV team)

Additional Requirements & Notes

  • No facial piercings and only natural hair colors allowed
  • Male candidates must be clean-shaven for fit testing
  • Must have own vehicle if part of a travel team
  • Weekly orientations on Mondays (except holidays)
  • Cannot hold concurrent contracts with other assignments
  • Must have been off permanent staff assignment with this health system for 12 months to qualify for travel assignment
  • High acuity environment with teaching responsibilities; nursing students may be present
  • Floor-specific orientation: 2 days
  • Must be competent in sterile technique and common ICU nursing skills
  • Parking provided with shuttle service for night shifts
