Job Opportunity: Registered Nurse - Family Birthing Center
Location: Grass Valley, California
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Job Description
Seeking experienced Labor and Delivery nurses for a travel contract in a Family Birthing Center. The unit includes Labor & Delivery (L&D) and Mother-Baby (MB) care with a total of 12 beds (4 L&D, 8 MB). The role involves caring for standard L&D patients including term and preterm deliveries, couplets, and general GYN patients. Transfers for high-risk mothers (34 weeks and below) are handled by other facilities.
Work Environment & Schedule
- Shift: 12-hour night shifts (1845-0715)
- Schedule: Every other weekend required; nights on Friday, Saturday, Sunday; days on Saturday and Sunday
- Holidays: Rotate with core staff, working 2 of the 3 major holidays (Thanksgiving, Christmas, New Year's)
- Patient Ratios:
- L&D: 1:2, 1:1 during active delivery
- MB: 1:4 (couplets)
- Orientation: 2-3 days floor-specific orientation with preceptor
- Floating: Not required; responsible for either L&D or MB only
- Additional Notes: Must be strong in emergencies and able to work independently, especially at night when fewer resources are available
Unit Details
- EMR system: Cerner
- Charge Nurse role included; generally does not take patients but provides break relief
- No nurse aides on unit
- Respiratory Therapist available 24/7
- Pharmacy available 0630-2200 with on-call support after hours
- No IV team; no ventilators on unit
- Hospitalist or Intensivist present during the day; OB and Anesthesia on-call at night
- Scrub color provided
Required Certifications & Licenses
- Active California RN License
- BLS (Basic Life Support)
- ACLS (Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support)
- NRP (Neonatal Resuscitation Program)
- STABLE Certification
- Advanced AWHONN (Association of Women's Health, Obstetric and Neonatal Nurses) certification including Advanced Fetal Monitoring (AFM)
Experience Requirements
- Minimum 2 years of Labor and Delivery nursing experience
- Must have 2 supervisory references (one within the last 12 months and one within the last 3 years)
Additional Information
- Approximately 45 deliveries per month
- Team during deliveries includes 2 RNs and 1 RT
- No self-scheduling; schedules posted 6 weeks in advance with ability to make oneself available for extra shifts and trade shifts
- Common diagnoses include standard L&D cases, term and preterm infants, couplets, and general GYN patients
- Emergency preparedness and independent work capability are essential
This position is ideal for experienced Labor and Delivery nurses seeking a travel contract with a supportive but independent work environment.
