Job Opportunity: Labor and Delivery Nurse

Location: Santa Maria, California
Contract Length: 13 weeks

Job Description

Seeking an experienced Labor and Delivery nurse for a travel contract in California. The role involves working in a Labor & Delivery/Postpartum unit with a total of 14 L&D beds, 6 triage beds, 2 OR suites, and 28 postpartum beds. The unit handles approximately 250 births per month.

Work Environment & Details

• Unit: Labor & Delivery / Postpartum
• Nurse-to-patient ratios:

  • Laboring: 2 to 1 (following AWOHNN guidelines)
  • Couplet care: 1 to 4
• Fetal Monitoring System: Fetal Link
• Electronic Medical Record (EMR): Cerner
• Charge Nurse role available (typically no patient assignment)
• OB tech support available on day and night shifts
• Weekend requirement: every other weekend
• Call requirement: none, but may be on standby
• Holiday shifts coordinated with permanent staff
• Shift length: 12 hours (7am-7pm or 7pm-7am)
• Floating: Required to float to postpartum; postpartum staff do not float to L&D
• Floor-specific orientation: 3 shifts
• Common patient diagnoses: any gestational age, antepartum, high-risk deliveries, substance abuse, pre-eclampsia, insulin-dependent diabetes
• C-section experience required; circulating for C-sections mandatory, scrubbing preferred
• Ventilators: No
• Respiratory Therapy available 24/7
• Pharmacy available 24/7
• Telemetry monitoring: Phillips system
• OB/Neonatologist not in-house but available if needed

Required Certifications & Licenses

• Active California RN License
• BLS (Basic Life Support)
• ACLS (Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support)
• AWOHNN (Association of Women's Health, Obstetric and Neonatal Nurses) Advanced Fetal Monitoring
• NRP (Neonatal Resuscitation Program)

Experience Requirements

• Minimum 2 years of Labor and Delivery nursing experience
• C-section circulating experience required

• COVID-19 vaccination required
• Scrub colors provided: Navy for postpartum nurses; seal blue for L&D nurses and OB techs
