Description

Registered Nurse - Intensive Care

Location: Brooklyn, New York
Employment Type: Clinical Nursing (Direct Patient Care)
Contract Length: 14 weeks


Job Summary

  • Provide direct patient care using the nursing process.
  • Responsible for prescribing, delegating, and coordinating care for assigned patients.
  • Deliver care according to established nursing standards and policies.
  • Diagnose and treat human responses to actual and potential health problems through case finding, health teaching, counseling, and supportive/restorative care.
  • Supervise care provided by LPNs, RNs on permit, nursing attendants, technicians, and supplemental staff.

Responsibilities

  • Assess immediate and ongoing care needs of patients and their significant others.
  • Develop comprehensive, current care plans addressing physical, psychosocial, spiritual, teaching, and discharge needs.
  • Provide direct patient care based on assessments and medical regimens.
  • Oversee all aspects of patient care and supervise other nursing personnel within scope of practice.
  • Observe, evaluate, document, and communicate patient responses to illness and treatments.
  • Ensure timely reassessment and follow-up when patient condition changes.
  • Coordinate overall care plan to align nursing interventions with medical treatments.
  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary team to establish care priorities.
  • Integrate age-specific care needs (e.g., pediatrics, geriatrics) into care plans.
  • Accept accountability for nursing interventions and outcomes.
  • Participate in quality improvement activities related to patient care and nursing standards.
  • Communicate effectively and manage stressful situations professionally.
  • Participate in orientation of new nursing staff and assume charge responsibilities as delegated.
  • Assist with patient coverage and work on other units as needed.
  • Maintain a safe, therapeutic environment for patients, families, and staff.
  • Serve as a clinical resource for student nurses.
  • Engage in meetings, committees, educational programs, research, and pilot projects.
  • Pursue continuing professional growth and education, including advanced degrees and certifications.
  • Participate in professional and community organizations.

Required Qualifications

Experience

  • Minimum of 3 years of experience in an Intensive Care Unit (ICU), including experience within the last year.
  • At least 3 years of experience in a Level I or II Trauma Center.
  • Experience in an Acute Care setting.
  • Trauma experience.
  • Competent in Continuous Renal Replacement Therapy (CRRT) machine operation.
  • Competent in ventilator and tracheostomy tube care.
  • Competent in gastrostomy tube care.
  • Competent in medication titration.
  • Competent in arterial line (A-line) management.

Education

  • Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) required.

Certifications & Licensure

  • Valid Registered Nurse (RN) license in New York.
  • Trauma Certified Registered Nurse (TCAR).
  • Basic Life Support (BLS).
  • Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS).
  • Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS).
  • Stroke Certification.
