Description
Registered Nurse (RN) – ICU Float Pool
Location: Centennial, Colorado (Zone 1 – 60 mile radius around Colorado Springs, CO)
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Shift: Nights (7pm–7am)
Hours per Week: 36 hours (12-hour shifts)
Work Setting: ICU Float Pool covering multiple ICU units (MICU, SICU, TICU, CVICU, etc.) across several hospitals within the zone
Floating Requirement:
- Must float throughout the entire Zone 1 (including Penrose Hospital, St. Francis Medical Center, St. Francis InterQuest, St. Mary Corwin, St. Thomas More)
- Floating includes various acuity levels: ICU, PCU/Stepdown, and Med-Surg Telemetry
- No home base facility; housing must allow for feasible travel within the 60-mile radius
Job Responsibilities
- Provide critical care nursing across multiple ICU types
- Manage nurse:patient ratios typically 1:1 to 1:2 depending on acuity; may flex up to 1:3
- Provide 1:1 care for high acuity patients requiring CRRT, IABP, Impella, etc.
- Comfortable titrating all critical drips including pressors, sedation, paralytics, antiarrhythmics, heparin, insulin, and others
- Read and interpret telemetry strips independently (no telemetry tech support)
- Assist with respiratory troubleshooting and management; work alongside respiratory therapists who may not be present 24/7
- Participate in holiday rotation and weekend shifts (6-9 weekend shifts in a 6-week schedule)
- Follow leadership-assigned schedules made 6 weeks in advance; flexibility required to fill scheduling gaps
- Adhere to dress code: any scrub color allowed
Orientation & Training
- 1-2 days unit/department-specific orientation with a preceptor
- Week of orientation requires clinician to be in-state (modules may be remote)
Required Certifications
- BLS (Basic Life Support) – AHA
- ACLS (Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support) – AHA
- NIHSS (National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale)
Required Experience & Skills
- Minimum 2 years ICU experience required
- If first-time traveler: 3+ years ICU experience and Epic electronic health record experience preferred
- Must be comfortable titrating critical drips and managing complex ICU patients
- Prior travel experience preferred but not mandatory
Additional Notes
- No charge nurse assignment expected unless necessary; night shift charge nurses may occasionally take patient assignments
- No nurse aides on unit except for sitter needs
- Respiratory therapy equipment includes ventilators, CPAP, BiPAP, and high flow devices
- Call or standby requirements are rare and only for low census situations
This position is ideal for experienced ICU RNs comfortable with floating across multiple ICU settings and managing high acuity patients independently during night shifts.
