Job Opportunity: Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT)

Location: Fredericksburg, Virginia
Employment Type: Travel/Contract
Contract Length: 13 weeks


Job Description

  • Position requires a Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT) with the ability to float between NICU, Emergency Room (ER), Adult ICU Stepdown units, pediatric units, and adult floors.
  • NICU assignments vary based on acuity; this is not a NICU-only role.
  • Responsibilities include airway management, medication administration, arterial blood gases (ABGs), oxygen therapy, suctioning, pulmonary toileting, BiPAP, CPAP, and nebulizer treatments.
  • Night shift duties involve aerosol therapies, bronchial hygiene, lung inflation therapies, arterial blood gas draws and analysis, and CPAP/BiPAP management.
  • Experience in adult and neonatal intensive care, emergency department, and level 2 trauma care is preferred but not mandatory.
  • Work setting includes adult critical care, ER, and community hospital environments.
  • The position requires rotation across multiple units to meet facility needs.

Required Qualifications

  • Valid Respiratory Therapist license in Virginia
  • Respiratory Therapist with at least 1 year of experience
  • Respiratory Therapist experience within the last year
  • Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification
  • Certified Respiratory Therapist Technician (CRTT) certification
  • Experience in an Acute Care setting
  • Experience with arterial blood gas draw and analysis

Preferred Qualifications

  • Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP) certification.
  • Prior experience in NICU, ER, and adult ICU preferred.

Additional Requirements & Skills

  • Experience with airway management, medication administration, ABGs, oxygen therapy, suctioning, pulmonary toileting, BiPAP, CPAP, and nebulizers.
  • Ability to provide various aerosol, bronchial hygiene, and lung inflation therapies.
  • Experience with arterial blood gas draw and analysis.
  • Preferred experience in adult and neonatal intensive care, emergency department, and level 2 trauma.
  • Attendance at monthly department meetings or acknowledgment of meeting minutes is required.

Work Schedule & Other Details

  • Start date: ASAP.
  • First-time travelers accepted.
  • Weekend requirement: every other weekend plus every other holiday.
  • On-call requirement: potential mandatory on-call shifts (2 per month).
  • Floating within scope to meet facility needs is required.
  • Block scheduling may be accommodated at manager’s discretion.
  • Local candidates accepted.
  • Return-to-office restrictions at manager’s discretion.

Required Documentation & Compliance

  • Valid Virginia state license for Respiratory Therapist.
  • BLS, ACLS, CRTT certifications.
  • Background check including criminal, education, and employment verifications.
  • Physical exam within one year prior to start.
  • Fit mask (N95) certification, updated annually.
  • Negative TB test or chest X-ray as required.
  • Drug testing within 30 days prior to start.
  • Immunization or immunity documentation for measles, mumps, rubella, hepatitis B, varicella.
  • Seasonal flu vaccination or approved medical/religious exemption.
  • COVID vaccination documentation or declination.
  • References: 2 required, including one current-year reference from a supervisor or equivalent.
  • Employment application and work history verification (minimum 2 years).
  • Completion of facility-specific orientation and competency exams as applicable.

Experience & Travel Requirements

  • Minimum 2 years of respiratory therapy experience required.
  • Prior travel experience is not required.

Facility & Environment

  • Short-term acute care hospital.
  • Level II Trauma Center.
  • 431 staffed beds.
  • Electronic medical record system: Epic.
  • Night shift position.

This opportunity is ideal for RRTs with diverse critical care experience who are flexible to work across multiple units including NICU, ER, adult ICU stepdown, and pediatric floors in a community hospital setting.
