Description
Registered Nurse – Cardiac Stepdown
Location: Morgantown, West Virginia
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Shift: Nights (12-hour shifts)
Hours per Week: 36 hours
Unit: 10 Southeast Heart & Vascular Institute
Unit Size: 32 beds (22 Stepdown, 12 Floor; all private rooms)
Nurse-to-Patient Ratios:
- Stepdown: 1 RN to 3 patients
- Floor: 1 RN to 6 patients
Unit Overview and Patient Population
- Cardiac Surgery Post-op patients including CABG, mid CABG, maze procedures, valve replacements, mitral clip, LVAD, heart transplants, TAVRs
- Vascular Surgery Post-op/procedures such as AAA repair, CEA, femoral bypass, angiograms, amputations
- Cardiology cases including STEMI, NSTEMI, heart failure, watchman device, cardiac cath procedures (PTCA, stents, ICDs, ablations, pacemakers)
Required Certifications and Skills
- BLS (Basic Life Support)
- ACLS (Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support)
- NIHSS (National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale)
- Cardiac and vascular nursing experience required
- Ability to titrate drips including heparin, amiodarone, Cardizem, TPA, Lasix, dobutamine
Staffing and Support
- Unit Charge Nurse and House Supervisors available 24/7
- Clinical Associates (nurse aides) with a ratio of approximately 1 CA to 8-10 patients (goal of 4-5 CAs per shift)
- Cardiac Monitor Technicians (CMTs) interpret telemetry strips on the unit; RNs also read strips
- Respiratory therapy equipment available: CPAP, BiPAP, high-flow oxygen
Scheduling and Work Environment
- Night shift only, three 12-hour shifts per week
- Weekend work required every other weekend
- Holiday shifts required as scheduled
- No call or standby requirement; overtime available
- Floating required to sister units within the Heart and Vascular Institute
- Unit dress code: solid royal blue and white scrubs
- Unit orientation: 2-3 shifts of unit-specific orientation provided
- Known for excellent patient care and a strong teamwork atmosphere
Submission and Eligibility Notes
- Candidates must have a driver’s license address located more than 50 miles from the facility
- Previous permanent candidates must have been off the unit for at least 2 years
- Previous travelers must have been off the unit for at least 2 years after completing 1 full year
- Travel teams must be submitted together
- Only 2 candidates submitted per opening; submissions held if position is full
- All submissions require an unexpired copy of the candidate’s driver’s license
