Description
Registered Nurse (RN) – Float Pool (MS-Telemetry)
Location: Salt Lake City, Utah
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Shift: Nights (12-hour shifts)
Hours per Week: 36 hours
Unit and Patient Population
- Float pool covers multiple units including General MS-Telemetry and specialties such as Cardiac, Neuro, Oncology, Rehab, Renal, Bariatrics, Orthopedics, Trauma, and Emergency Department Observation.
- Patient population primarily adults to geriatrics with diagnoses including cardiac, neuro, orthopedic, oncology, renal, urology post-surgical, general surgery post-appendectomy, gynecology, psychiatric/detox, ENT, general medicine, and stable long-term placement patients.
- Nurse-to-patient ratio typically 1:5-6 depending on acuity.
- Charge nurse present on each unit; usually does not take patient assignments unless necessary.
- Nurse aides are available on the units.
- Respiratory therapy equipment such as vents, CPAP, BiPAP is present.
- RNs are required to titrate heparin drips.
Required Qualifications
- Valid RN license in Utah
- Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) / Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN)
- Minimum of 2 years telemetry nursing experience, with telemetry experience within the last year
- ACLS certification issued by the American Heart Association
- BLS certification issued by the American Heart Association
- NIH Stroke Scale (NIHSS) certification
Scheduling and Work Expectations
- Schedule is set by leadership for 6 weeks at a time.
- Travelers must be flexible to fill gaps in permanent staffing and float across units and hospitals within a 60-mile radius zone.
- Weekend shifts: 6-9 per 6-week schedule.
- May be asked to participate in holiday rotation.
- Call or standby is rare and only for low census situations.
- Floating assignments may include ICU (low acuity holds within skillset), PCU/Stepdown, and MS-Tele units.
- Time off requests must be submitted prior to assignment start.
- Dress code: Any scrub color allowed.
Orientation and Additional Information
- Orientation lasts 1-2 days with a preceptor.
- Week of orientation requires clinician to be in-state, even if some modules are remote.
- Floating throughout the entire zone is mandatory; housing must accommodate travel within a 60-mile radius.
- Night shift hours typically 6 PM to 6 AM, every other week schedule.
Summary
This role is ideal for experienced MS-Telemetry RNs comfortable with a variety of adult patient populations and flexible floating assignments across multiple specialties and hospitals within a regional zone. Strong telemetry skills, ACLS/BLS certification, and recent MS-Tele experience are essential. Night shift availability and willingness to work weekends and holidays are required.
