Registered Nurse (RN) - Stepdown Unit (Contract)

Location: New York, NY
Shift: Night Shift (7:00 PM – 7:30 AM), Every Other Weekend (EOW) Required
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Hours: Approximately 11 hours per day, 34.5 hours per week


Job Summary

Provide safe, competent, and quality nursing care to a designated group of patients using evidence-based practice and nursing theory. Collaborate with interdisciplinary teams to assess, plan, implement, and evaluate patient care, prioritizing patient safety, education, and experience.


Key Responsibilities

Patient Care

  • Deliver nursing care based on professional practice models and nursing process.
  • Assess and evaluate patient needs using critical thinking.
  • Integrate assessment and intervention skills in care delivery.
  • Collaborate with healthcare team to develop and evaluate care plans.
  • Prioritize patient care including teaching, rounding, coaching, and discharge planning.
  • Educate patients and caregivers on care plans, health promotion, and disease prevention.
  • Communicate effectively with patients, families, and care team members.
  • Manage assignments within a Modified Primary Nursing care delivery model.

Patient Experience

  • Facilitate patient-centered care activities such as bedside shift reports, purposeful hourly rounding, medication review, and discharge wrap-up.
  • Respect patient values, preferences, cultural diversity, and expressed needs.
  • Establish therapeutic relationships with patients and families.
  • Use evidence-based practices to improve patient perceptions of care.
  • Address patient and family concerns promptly and escalate as needed.
  • Demonstrate empathy, respect, and active listening.

Quality and Safety

  • Practice safe, efficient, patient-centered care and identify barriers to improvement.
  • Demonstrate clinical skills essential to patient safety.
  • Participate in quality improvement projects and evidence-based practice activities.
  • Follow institutional protocols to avoid high-risk behaviors and ensure a safe environment.
  • Document nursing practice accurately to support quality initiatives.

Operations

  • Perform charge nurse duties as assigned.
  • Coordinate supply and inventory management with nursing leadership.
  • Escalate material or staffing shortages appropriately.
  • Promote cost-effective patient care resource utilization.
  • Facilitate patient throughput during shifts.

Professional Development

  • Support colleagues, patients, families, and healthcare team members.
  • Advance clinical competence from novice to expert.
  • Maintain a professional image and communicate with respect and empathy.
  • Apply ethical principles in decision-making.
  • Engage in lifelong learning, scholarship, and innovation.
  • Participate in shared decision-making through committees and councils.

Required Qualifications

  • Valid Registered Nurse (RN) license in New York State.
  • Minimum 2 years of Stepdown unit nursing experience, including experience within the last year.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.
  • Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) certification issued by the American Heart Association.
  • Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN).
  • Minimum 2 years of cardiology experience.
  • Minimum 2 years of ventricular assist device (VAD) experience.
  • Minimum 2 years of ventilator experience.
  • Experience in telemetry nursing.

Additional Information

  • This position requires working night shifts with every other weekend coverage.
  • The role involves both direct patient care and operational responsibilities including charge nurse duties.
  • Emphasis on patient-centered care, safety, quality improvement, and professional growth.
