Description

Registered Nurse – Labor & Delivery

Location: Saint Louis, Missouri
Employment Type: Travel
Contract Length: 13 weeks


Job Summary

Provide comprehensive nursing care to laboring, delivering, and immediate postpartum patients in a fast-paced, high acuity hospital setting. Independently manage routine and high-risk obstetric patients while collaborating with obstetric providers, anesthesia, NICU, and interdisciplinary teams to ensure safe, evidence-based, patient-centered care throughout the labor and birth process.


Unit Information

  • Unit: Labor & Delivery (L&D)
  • Patient Ratios:
    • Labor & Delivery: 2 patients per nurse
    • Antepartum: 3-4 patients per nurse
  • Float between Antepartum and Labor & Delivery as needed
  • Level 3 NICU and Level 4 acute care with high volume deliveries (~8,000/year)
  • Electronic Medical Record system: EPIC

Schedule

  • Shift: Nights (7:00 pm – 7:30 am)
  • Shift Pattern: 3 or 4 twelve-hour shifts per week
  • Weekly Guaranteed Hours: 36 to 48
  • Weekend Hours: Rotating
  • Call Requirements: As needed

Required Qualifications

  • Valid Registered Nurse (RN) license in Missouri
  • Minimum 2 years of Labor and Delivery experience, including experience within the last year
  • Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) or Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN)
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification
  • Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP) certification
  • Association of Women’s Health, Obstetric and Neonatal Nurses (AWHONN) Fetal Heart Monitoring (FHM) certification
  • Experience with fetal monitoring and interpretation
  • Experience in an acute care setting
  • Experience working in a team-based, high acuity environment
  • Comfortable floating between Antepartum and Labor & Delivery units as needed

Skills and Experience

  • Strong skills in fetal monitoring and interpretation
  • Ability to independently manage laboring patients, including high-risk obstetric cases
  • Experience with labor support, coaching, medication administration, and IV therapy
  • Proficient in managing obstetric emergencies and rapid response situations
  • Comfortable working in a team-based, high acuity environment
  • Excellent communication, critical thinking, and time management skills
  • Adaptability to new workflows, policies, and electronic medical records

Additional Requirements

  • Flu vaccination required for all travelers from November 1 through April 1 (exemptions require approval)
  • Comfortable floating between Antepartum and Labor & Delivery units as needed

Work Environment and Culture

  • Team-oriented with expectation to work independently when necessary
  • High volume, fast-paced acute care setting with complex patient needs
  • Dress code: Black scrubs required
