Description
Registered Nurse (RN) – Medical ICU / Progressive Care Unit
Location: Fort Wayne, Indiana
Employment Type: Traveler - Backfill
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Shift: 3:00 AM – 3:00 PM (12-hour shifts)
Hours per Week: 36 hours (three 12-hour shifts per week)
Schedule: Traditional weekday plus weekend rotation
Unit Overview
- Mixed acuity unit with both ICU and Progressive Care patients.
- Medical ICU: 24 beds; Progressive Care Unit (PCU): 12 beds.
- Nurse-to-patient ratios:
- PCU: 1:3 (or 1:4 with transfers or medical patients)
- ICU: 1:2 (or 1:3 with transfers or medical patients)
- Travelers primarily care for Progressive Care patients but will also care for ICU patients.
- Floating required to all ICU, PCU, and Medsurg units, maintaining a maximum 1:3 nurse-to-patient ratio.
- Equipment used includes Phillips heart monitors, Epic (EMR), Pyxis, EKG machines, and dopplers.
Job Responsibilities
- Care for ventilated patients.
- Initiate and titrate IV drips including vasopressors, sedation, and paralytics.
- Assist with intubations and line placements.
- Monitor critically ill patients with diagnoses such as sepsis, respiratory failure (acute and chronic), renal failure (acute and chronic), myocardial infarctions, pulmonary embolism, and pneumonia.
- Work collaboratively in a team-oriented environment.
- Follow unit-specific dress code: Caribbean blue scrubs; jackets must be black, white, or Caribbean blue; undershirts must be black or white.
Required Qualifications
- Minimum 1.5 years ICU experience required; 2 years ICU experience preferred.
- Valid Indiana RN license.
- BLS (AHA only) certification.
- ACLS (AHA only) certification.
- Strong background in medical and critical care patients.
- Ability to critically think, reason, and be flexible.
- Travel experience preferred but not explicitly required.
Orientation and Training
- One day of unit-specific onboarding.
- Training through workforce development including policy review and Epic EMR access.
Additional Notes
- Position will never require working alone.
- Candidates should communicate any required time off during the assignment in advance.
