Job Opportunity: Registered Nurse - PCU/MS Float
Location: Roanoke, Virginia
Employment Type: Travel/Contract
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Job Summary
Seeking a Registered Nurse comfortable working across Progressive Care Unit (PCU) and Medical-Surgical (MS) units. The role involves floating between units based on staffing needs, with frequent reassessment every 4 hours.
Schedule Details
- Shift: 3 shifts of 12 hours each (6:45 PM – 7:15 AM)
- Floating: May float 2-3 times per shift (up to every 4 hours)
- Weekend Requirement: Every other weekend or 6 weekend shifts in a 6-week block
- Holiday Requirement: Must work one holiday per 13-week contract
- First-time travelers accepted
- Local candidates accepted within radius rules
- Pending license accepted only if holding a single-state license from a non-compact state; otherwise, active Virginia RN license required
- Call-off policy: Allowed 1 call-off shift per 2 weeks
Required Certifications
- ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support)
- BLS (Basic Life Support)
Required Clinical Skills
- Experience with IV therapy, phlebotomy, and blood product administration
- Skilled in central line care, tracheostomy management, and non-invasive airway support (nasal cannula, CPAP/BiPAP, chest tubes)
- Proficient in cardiac monitoring, dysrhythmia interpretation and management, titrating cardiac drips
- Ability to respond to emergencies via Rapid Response/Code teams
- Capable of managing PCA and heparin protocols, administering IV insulin, and handling endocrine/metabolic conditions
- Background in telemetry and stepdown-level care (PCU/DOU/IMC) with cardiovascular experience in pre/post cardiac catheterization settings
Unit Details
- PCU nurse-to-patient ratio: approximately 5:1
- MS nurse-to-patient ratio: approximately 6:1 (may flex up to 7:1)
Required Qualifications
- Valid Registered Nurse (RN) license in Virginia
- Minimum 1 year of Progressive Care Unit (PCU) experience within the last year
- Telemetry experience
- ACLS certification issued by the American Heart Association
- BLS certification issued by the American Heart Association
- Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) or Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN)
- Non-invasive airway support including CPAP/BiPAP and chest tubes (Emerson/PleurEvac)
- Cardiac monitoring
- Dysrhythmia interpretation and management
- Titrating cardiac drips
- Cardiovascular experience in pre/post cardiac catheterization settings
- Experience with Epic electronic health record system
Additional Requirements
- Physical exam within 1 year, free from communicable diseases
- Negative TB test or chest X-ray within 1 year
- Fit test within 1 year, updated annually
- Negative 10-panel drug screen within 30 days of start
- Immunizations or positive titers for Measles, Mumps, Rubella, Varicella, Hepatitis B
- Background check covering 7 years of history
- Education verification and transcript/diploma required
- Two clinical references required
- Completion of skills checklist annually
- Compliance with facility-specific documentation and orientation requirements
Notes
- Floating between PCU and MS units is mandatory; candidates must be comfortable with this flexibility.
- Weekend and holiday shifts are required as part of the contract.
- First-time travel nurses are welcome to apply; prior travel experience is not required.
This position offers an opportunity to work in a high-acuity environment with a focus on telemetry and stepdown care, supporting patients with cardiovascular and complex medical needs.
