Job Opportunity: Registered Nurse – PCU Medical/Pulmonary with Renal Overflow
Location: Roanoke, Virginia
Employment Type: Travel/Contract
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Position Overview
Seeking a Registered Nurse for a Progressive Care Unit (PCU) specializing in Medical/Pulmonary care with renal overflow patients. Experience with chronic ventilator patients is required (not ICU level).
Schedule
- 3 shifts per week, 12 hours each (6:45 AM – 7:15 PM)
- Weekend requirement: Every other weekend or 6 weekend shifts within a 6-week block
- Floating within skillset required
Required Certifications
- ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support)
- BLS (Basic Life Support)
- NIHSS (National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale)
Required Clinical Skills
- Cardiac monitoring, including interpretation and management of dysrhythmias
- Administration of cardiac drips (e.g., Cardizem, Heparin, Insulin, low dose dopamine and dobutamine, Amiodarone, Nitro, Bumex, Lasix; no titration)
- IV therapy, phlebotomy, blood product administration, and central/peripheral line care
- Ventilator care for chronic ventilated patients
- Respiratory support using nasal cannula, oxygen administration, and non-invasive airway management
- Participation in Rapid Response and Code teams
- Adherence to isolation precautions
Unit Details
- Nurse-to-patient ratio: 1:5
- Patient population: Adult and geriatric patients with pulmonary and other medicine-related conditions, including renal overflow
- Can accommodate up to two ventilated patients
- Use of remote telemetry and tele-sitting technology for patient monitoring
Experience Requirements
- Specialty: Registered Nurse
- Minimum years of experience: Not explicitly stated; ensure relevant PCU and pulmonary/renal care experience, including chronic ventilator care
- Prior travel experience: Not required; first-time travelers accepted
Licensing Requirements
- Active Registered Nurse (RN) license valid in Virginia (state or compact license)
- Pending licenses accepted only if from a non-compact single state license
Charting System
- EPIC experience required
Additional Requirements
- Must comply with background checks, drug screening, and health document requirements (e.g., physical exam, immunizations, TB testing)
- Must provide professional photo for badge
- Must complete orientation and compliance paperwork prior to start
- Must provide 2 clinical references or hospital evaluations
- Must complete skills checklist annually
Requirements/Qualifications
- Valid RN license in Virginia
- Minimum 1 year of Progressive Care Unit (PCU) experience within the last year
- ACLS certification issued by the American Heart Association
- BLS certification issued by the American Heart Association
- NIHSS certification
- Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) or Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN)
- Administration of cardiac drips (Cardizem, Heparin, Insulin, low dose dopamine and dobutamine, Amiodarone, Nitro, Bumex, Lasix; no titration)
- Ventilator care for chronic ventilated patients (non-ICU level)
- Respiratory support using nasal cannula, oxygen administration, and non-invasive airway management
- Participation in Rapid Response and Code teams
- Experience with EPIC charting system
Notes
- Local candidates accepted within a specified radius
- Facility allows one call-off shift per two weeks
- Candidates must submit all required documentation promptly, including I-9, driver's license/state ID, and education verification
