Registered Nurse (CVICU) - South Charleston, West Virginia

Job Details

• Contract Length: 13 weeks
• Shift: Nights
• Hours per Day: 12
• Hours per Week: 36
• Unit Beds: 4 beds in acute recovery phase before transfer to Medical ICU or Stepdown
• Patient Population: Adult and geriatric critically ill patients with prior heart conditions and complex, life-threatening needs
• Nurse-to-Patient Ratios:

  • Initial phase: 1:1
  • Progressing phase: 1:1 on POD#0, 1:2 on POD#1

Required Qualifications

• Current CVICU experience
• Minimum 1 to 2 years of critical care experience (use higher value: 2 years)
• Prior travel nursing experience required
• Certifications:

  • Basic Life Support (BLS)
  • Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS)
• Preferred Certification: Trauma Nursing Core Course (TNCC) (preferred, effective 10/21/2025)
• Skills:

  • Experience with Continuous Renal Replacement Therapy (CRRT)
  • Experience with Impella and Intra-Aortic Balloon Pump (IABP)
  • Ability to titrate drips (dopamine, levophed, vaso, dobutamine, argatroban, amiodarone, cardizem, heparin, insulin, lasix, epinephrine, neosynephrine)

Clinical Environment & Support

• No nurse aides on unit
• Charge Nurse role primarily without patient assignments
• House Supervisor available 24/7
• Hospitalist/Intensivist coverage: CT Surgery attending with critical care/pulmonary coverage
• Respiratory Therapists available as needed (not stationed in ICU)
• Respiratory equipment includes BiPAP, CPAP, mechanical ventilation via trach and ET tube
• Telemetry monitoring: RNs read strips; no dedicated monitor techs

Scheduling & Work Conditions

• Shifts: 6:45 pm to 7:15 am (night shift)
• Weekend requirement: Every other weekend
• Holiday requirement: Rotational
• No call or standby requirement
• Floating: Required to float to Medical ICU if no CVICU need

Orientation & Training

• General hospital orientation on first day
• Full day nursing orientation for RNs
• Computer training (full day for nurses)
• Two 12-hour orientation shifts with preceptor
• Abbreviated Initial Skills Checklist due within 90 days of start date

Dress Code

• Scrubs: Solid color only, no embroidery or patterns

  • RN/LPN: Navy
  • CNAs/Monitor Techs: Dark grey/pewter
• Allowed fleece zip-ups: Grey, black, navy, or royal blue (solid color, no logos)
• Solid undershirts in white, grey, or black matching scrub top
• Closed-toed shoes only; no crocs

This position offers the opportunity to care for critically ill cardiovascular patients in a specialized CVICU setting with a supportive team and structured orientation. Prior travel experience and advanced critical care skills are essential.
