Description
Registered Nurse (RN) – ICU Float Pool
Location: Zone 3 around Denver City Center, Colorado (60-mile radius covering multiple hospitals)
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Shift: Nights
Hours: 12-hour shifts, approximately 36 hours per week
Job Overview
- Float pool role covering multiple ICU units including MICU, SICU, TICU, CVICU, and others within a 60-mile radius zone.
- No home base facility; must be able to travel and float between facilities within the zone.
- Schedules released 4–6 weeks in advance with two formats:
- Scheduled at a single facility for the week with possible floating within that facility.
- Just-In-Time (JIT) assignment where facility is assigned 1–2 hours before shift start.
- Expected to be flexible to fill gaps in permanent scheduling.
- Weekend requirement: 6–9 weekend shifts in a 6-week schedule.
- May be asked to participate in holiday rotation.
- Rare call or standby requirements for low census.
Patient Care & Unit Details
- Nurse-to-patient ratios range from 1:1 to 1:3 depending on acuity.
- High acuity patients (e.g., CRRT, IABP, Impella) require 1:1 care.
- No nurse aides assigned; sitter support only.
- Respiratory Therapist designated for ICU but may not be present 24/7; RNs expected to assist with respiratory troubleshooting and management.
- RNs must read and interpret telemetry strips independently (no telemetry tech support).
- Common equipment includes ventilators, CPAP, BiPAP, high flow oxygen, and breathing treatments.
- Must be comfortable titrating critical drips such as pressors, sedation, paralytics, antiarrhythmics, heparin, insulin, and others.
- Charge nurse assigned per unit, typically does not take patient assignments except on night shifts.
Required Qualifications
- Minimum 3 years of ICU experience if first-time traveler; otherwise, 2 years ICU experience preferred.
- Epic electronic health record experience required for first-time travelers.
- Prior travel experience preferred but not mandatory.
- Certifications required: ACLS (AHA), BLS (AHA), NIH Stroke Scale (NIHSS).
- Must be comfortable managing critical care drips and interpreting telemetry.
- Must be able to float across different acuity levels including ICU, PCU/Stepdown, and Medical-Surgical Telemetry units.
Orientation & Training
- 1–2 days of unit-specific orientation with a preceptor.
- Week of orientation must be completed in-state, even if some modules are done remotely.
Additional Notes
- Must secure housing that allows floating within the entire 60-mile zone.
- Dress code: any scrub color allowed.
- All time off requests must be submitted prior to starting the assignment.
