Description
Registered Nurse - PCU (Progressive Care Unit)
Location: Roanoke, Virginia
Employment Type: Travel/Contract
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Job Details
- Shift: 3 shifts per week, 12 hours each (6:45 AM – 7:15 PM)
- Weekend Requirement: Every other weekend or 6 weekend shifts within a 6-week block
- Holiday Requirement: Must work one holiday per 13-week contract
- Charting System: EPIC experience required
- Floating: Required to float within skillset to other PCUs and possibly Medical-Surgical units
- Patient Ratio: Goal 4:1, typically 5:1
- Unit: 25-bed Medical Unit specializing in acutely and chronically ill adults with complex medical diagnoses
- Telemetry: Remote telemetry monitoring with tele-sitting support
Required Qualifications
- Valid RN license in Virginia
- Minimum 1 year of Progressive Care Unit (PCU) experience within the last year
- ACLS certification issued by the American Heart Association
- BLS certification issued by the American Heart Association
- NIH Stroke Scale (NIHSS) certification
- Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) or Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN)
- Proficiency in interpretation and management of dysrhythmias
- Competency in chest tube management
- Competency in PICC line management
- Experience in telemetry monitoring
- Experience with EPIC charting system
Required Documentation & Compliance
- I-9 or attestation
- Valid Driver’s License/State ID within 48 hours of signing (must meet radius rule criteria)
- E-Verify or attestation
- 7-year background check within 1 year of start (covering all locations lived/worked)
- EPLS/GSA/SAM and HHS/OIG checks within 30 days of start and updated for renewals
- Education verification or transcript/diploma of highest earned degree
- State license primary source verification and NURSYS verification (for RNs) within 30 days of start
- Physical exam within 1 year confirming freedom from communicable diseases
- Negative 10-panel drug screen within 30 days of start
- Fit test within 1 year, updated annually (not required for students)
- Negative TB test or chest X-ray within 1 year, updated annually
- Required immunizations or positive titers: Measles, Mumps, Rubella, Varicella, Hepatitis B
- TB questionnaire required for all candidates
- Professional photo for badge (no selfies or filters)
- Completion of new hire paperwork and compliance checklists prior to start
- References: 2 clinical references or hospital evaluations

- Facility allows call off of 1 shift per 2 weeks
- Locals accepted within radius rule
- Orientation manual review required prior to start (not required for inpatient RNs)
- Candidates must sign compliance and confidentiality agreements within 48 hours of signing contract
- Candidates must complete fit testing form regardless of prior fit test status (except students)
