Job Opportunity: ECMO Specialist (Registered Nurse)
Location: Greenville, South Carolina
Employment Type: Travel/Contract
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Shift: Nights, 7:00 PM – 7:30 AM (3 shifts of 12 hours each per week)
Hours per Week: 36 hours
Job Description
- Provide specialized care managing ECMO (Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation) devices in critical care settings.
- Float between Cardiovascular ICU (CVICU) and Pediatric ICU (PICU) units.
- Care for both pediatric and adult patients requiring ECMO support.
- Patient diagnoses include post-cardiac surgery, cardiogenic shock, traumatic injury, ARDS/respiratory failure, sepsis, and other critical acute illnesses.
- Manage ECMO devices during bedside cannulation and cannula repositioning procedures.
- Operate specialized equipment including Cardiohelp and Centrimag ECMO consoles, Cardio Quip heater-cooler unit, and point-of-care glucometers.
- Collaborate closely with ICU RNs and Respiratory Therapists, following ECMO order sets and provider team directions.
Required Qualifications
- Valid Registered Nurse (RN) license in South Carolina.
- Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) or Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN).
- Minimum 1 year of Cardiovascular ICU (CVICU) experience within the last year.
- ECMO ICU experience.
- Experience with Epic electronic health record system.
- Current ACLS certification issued by the American Heart Association or American Red Cross.
- Current BLS certification issued by the American Heart Association or American Red Cross.
- Current PALS certification issued by the American Heart Association or American Red Cross.
Orientation and Training
- Completion of online Cornerstone modules (approximately 12 hours) within 72 hours of assignment.
- Pass/Fail testing on medication and arrhythmia exams required prior to start.
- Respirator fit testing completed onsite during orientation.
- Floating policy acknowledgment required due to unit float between CVICU and PICU.
Compliance and Documentation Requirements
- Valid Driver’s License required immediately upon signing for computer access and must be carried on duty.
- Background checks including 7-year history, EPLS/GSA/SAM, HHS/OIG, and others as applicable.
- Primary source verification of RN license within 30 days of start.
- Annual and pre-start health documents including:
- Physical exam attesting ability to meet job demands.
- Immunizations and/or titers for TB, Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Rubella, Varicella, Hepatitis B, Tetanus/Diphtheria/Tdap, and seasonal flu vaccine or approved exemption.
- Drug screening within 1 year of start, updated annually.
- Annual competency exams and core training modules (Parts I, II, III) including OSHA, patient safety, and age-specific care.
- Badge photo meeting facility specifications required prior to start.
Patient Population and Environment
- Work with critically ill patients requiring ECMO support in both adult and pediatric ICUs.
- Manage complex cardiac and respiratory conditions post-surgery or trauma.
- High-acuity environment requiring advanced critical care nursing skills and ECMO device management.
Additional Notes
- This position requires flexibility to float between units and manage specialized ECMO equipment.
- Candidates must be prepared for night shifts and weekend coverage.
- The role demands strong collaboration with multidisciplinary ICU teams.
- All certifications must be current and cannot expire within 30 days of assignment start.
