Description

Registered Nurse – Neuro Acute Epilepsy Monitoring

Location: Phoenix, Arizona
Unit: Neuro Acute 6N (48 beds total, including 10 epilepsy specialty rooms)
Shift: Days
Hours: 12-hour shifts (7am–7pm), 36 hours per week
Contract Length: 13 weeks minimum


Job Overview

  • Care for patients with epilepsy, brain tumors, subdural hematoma, scoliosis surgeries, traumatic brain injury, and other neurological diagnoses.
  • Manage 24-48 hour trend EEG monitoring.
  • Work in a Level 1 Trauma and teaching hospital environment.
  • Nurse-to-patient ratio: 1:4 (days and nights).
  • Charge nurse role available (no patient assignment).
  • Weekend requirement: 3 shifts every 4 weeks (self-scheduled).
  • Holiday work included in rotation.
  • Floating may be required to MedSurg/Telemetry units or other campuses.
  • Floor-specific orientation: 2 shifts on the unit.
  • Utilize critical thinking and strong assessment skills, including cranial nerve assessment training.
  • Use of self-releasing velcro seat belts (not restraints).

Required Certifications & Experience

  • Minimum 2 years of core nursing experience in specialty (Neuro Acute/MedSurg/Telemetry).
  • Level 1 Trauma experience required.
  • BLS and ACLS certifications required.
  • BSN preferred.
  • Med Surg/Telemetry certification preferred.
  • Cerner EMR experience required.
  • Prophecy Dysrhythmia Exam required 24-48 hours prior to acceptance (max 2 attempts).
  • Pass/fail SIMs Lab on Day 1 of orientation (skills include Foley catheter insertion and central line dressing changes; exceptions apply for some units).
  • Prior travel experience required for Neuro ICU or Emergency Department roles.

Additional Requirements & Notes

  • Must have natural hair color; no facial piercings allowed.
  • Male candidates must be clean-shaven for fit testing.
  • Travel teams must have their own vehicles.
  • Cannot hold multiple contracts simultaneously.
  • Must be off permanent staff at this health system for 12 months to qualify for travel assignment.
  • Parking provided with shuttle service; night shift parking in garage.
  • Teaching hospital environment; nursing students may be present.
  • Strong critical thinking and patient assessment skills essential.
  • Respiratory therapy available 24/7; RT manages BiPAP ventilation.
  • IV team (SWAT RN) available for difficult IV access.
  • Pharmacy services available 24/7.
  • Scrub color: Grey’s Anatomy / Steel.

Patient Care Environment

  • Mainly MedSurg with some Telemetry.
  • Hospitalist or Intensivist present during day shifts.
  • Nurse aides (PCTs) support staffing: 1-2 on days, 1 at night.
  • Charge nurse and resource RN coverage on both day and night shifts.

Orientation & Onboarding

  • Weekly orientations on Mondays (except holidays).
  • Onboarding paperwork must be completed by Wednesday 1pm CST before start date.
  • Failure to complete onboarding on time will delay start.
  • Pass/fail exam on Day 1 of orientation.
  • SIMs Lab is pass/fail; sterile field competency required.

This position is ideal for experienced Neuro Acute or MedSurg/Telemetry RNs with strong critical thinking skills, prior travel experience, and the ability to work in a fast-paced, teaching hospital environment.
