Registered Nurse - PCU Float
Location: Roanoke, Virginia
Employment Type: Travel/Contract
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Shift: Night (3 shifts per week, 12 hours each, 6:45 PM - 7:15 AM)
Hours per Week: 36
Job Overview
- Must be comfortable working across all Progressive Care Unit (PCU) and Medical-Surgical (MS) units.
- Floating is required; staff may be reassigned every 4 hours, potentially floating 2-3 times per shift.
- Weekend shifts: May be every other weekend or 6 weekend shifts within a 6-week block.
- Holiday shifts: Must work at least one holiday during the 13-week contract.
- First-time travelers are accepted.
- Local candidates accepted within a specified radius.
- Facility may call off 1 shift every 2 weeks.
Required Qualifications
Licenses & Certifications
- Valid RN license in Virginia
- ACLS issued by American Heart Association
- BLS issued by American Heart Association
Education
- Associate of Science in Nursing / Associate Degree in Nursing
Experience & Skills
- Minimum 1 year of Progressive Care Unit (PCU) experience within the last year
- Experienced in IV therapy
- Experienced in phlebotomy
- Skilled in central line care
- Skilled in trach management
- Skilled in non-invasive airway support (nasal cannula, CPAP/BiPAP)
- Skilled in chest tube management (Emerson/PleurEvac)
- Proficient in cardiac monitoring
- Experience titrating cardiac drips
- Experience responding to emergencies via Rapid Response and Code teams
- Cardiovascular experience in pre/post cardiac catheterization settings
- Telemetry experience
- Experience with Epic electronic health record system
Unit Details
- PCU nurse-to-patient ratio: approximately 5:1.
- MS nurse-to-patient ratio: approximately 6:1, may flex up to 7:1.
Required Documentation & Compliance
- Valid Driver’s License/State ID with an address within 100 miles of the facility.
- E-Verify or attestation required.
- 7-year background check covering all locations lived/worked in the past 7 years.
- EPLS/GSA/SAM and HHS/OIG checks required within 30 days of start and updated for renewals.
- Education verification of highest earned degree required.
- Physical exam within 1 year confirming freedom from communicable diseases.
- Negative 10-panel drug screen within 30 days of start.
- Fit test within 1 year of start, updated annually.
- Negative TB test or chest X-ray within 1 year, updated annually.
- Required immunizations or positive titers: Measles (Rubeola), Mumps, Rubella, Hepatitis B, Varicella.
- Flu vaccination or signed declination form required during flu season.
- Professional photo for badge.
- Completion of facility-specific compliance and confidentiality agreements.
- Completion of new hire paperwork prior to start.
- Completion of orientation safety manual acknowledgment (not required for inpatient RNs).
- Two clinical references required.
- Updated skills checklist annually.
- Employment application/resume required.
Additional Notes
- Candidates must be prepared to float frequently and work variable assignments within PCU and MS units.
- The facility is a Level I Trauma Center with Magnet designation for nursing excellence.
- Telemetry experience is essential.
- Prior travel experience is not required.
- Scheduling requests must be submitted with the application.
