Registered Nurse (L&D/PP) - Travel Contract
Location: Oxnard, California
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Job Overview
Seeking an experienced Labor & Delivery/Postpartum (L&D/PP) nurse for a travel assignment in a hospital setting. The unit includes L&D, triage, postpartum, and nursery beds, with approximately 3 births per day. The role involves working 12-hour night shifts with a typical schedule of 36 hours per week.
Unit Details
- L&D Beds: 7
- Triage Beds: 4 plus 2 overflow
- Postpartum Beds: 27 with a 5-bed nursery
- Births per year: ~1545
- Nurse-to-patient ratios follow AWHONN guidelines
- EMR system: Cerner
- Fetal Monitoring System: FetalLink (integrates with Cerner)
- Charge nurse and resource nurse support available
- OB techs assist with C-sections, deliveries, supply stocking, and patient intake
- 24/7 Respiratory Therapy and Pharmacy support
- OB/Neonatologist available on call with 30-minute response time
- No ventilators or IV team on unit
- Scrub color: Navy
Work Schedule & Requirements
- Shifts: 12 hours (7:00 PM – 7:30 AM)
- Weekend Requirement: 4 weekend shifts every 4 weeks
- Holidays: Typically one major and one minor holiday worked alongside permanent staff
- Call: Optional but preferred; discuss during interview
- Orientation: 3 shifts floor-specific orientation
- Floating:
- L&D nurses must have postpartum experience and float between L&D, postpartum, and NICU (grower/feeders care)
- Postpartum nurses may float to L&D or NICU for tasks within scope
- C-section: Circulating experience required; scrubbing not mandatory
Patient Population & Common Diagnoses
- High-risk deliveries of any gestational age
- EMT drop-offs
- Patients with substance abuse and withdrawal
- Many Spanish-speaking patients
- Patients often without prenatal care
- Transfers to higher-level facilities if critically ill
Required Qualifications
- Minimum 2-3 years of L&D/PP nursing experience (use higher value: 3 years)
- Active California RN license
- Certifications:
- BLS (Basic Life Support)
- ACLS (Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support)
- NRP (Neonatal Resuscitation Program)
- AWHONN (Association of Women’s Health, Obstetric and Neonatal Nurses) certification, intermediate or advanced fetal monitoring preferred
- COVID-19 vaccination required
- Prior travel nursing experience preferred (at least one prior travel contract)
Additional Notes
- Nurses will float every other week (EOW) for night shifts
- Experience with fetal monitoring and high-risk obstetrics is important
- Ability to work in a fast-paced, diverse patient population with complex needs is essential
