Description
Registered Nurse (PCU) – Night Shift
Location: Kearney, Nebraska
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Job Overview
Seeking experienced PCU Registered Nurses for night shifts in a 40-bed Progressive Care Unit (PCU) with an average daily census of 24 patients. The unit cares for adult patients with cardiac medical/surgical needs, dialysis, cancer, vascular issues, sepsis, respiratory conditions, stroke, post-stent and pacer placement, and renal failure.
Schedule & Hours
- 12-hour night shifts (18:30–06:30)
- 36 hours guaranteed per week
- Weekend requirement: every other weekend
- Minimum of 2 holidays during contract
- Floating required to MedSurg or ICU for PCU acuity patients
- On-call staff must arrive within 30 minutes if called back in
Patient Care & Unit Details
- Nurse-to-patient ratio: 1:4-5
- Charge nurse present each shift and takes assignment
- Patient care techs/nurse aides available at a 1:12 ratio
- RNs must titrate drips including Heparin, Nitro, Dopamine, Cardizem, Amiodarone, and insulin
- RNs required to read and interpret telemetry strips
- Competency required in managing arterial lines
- RNs troubleshoot high flow respiratory equipment (e.g., high flow oxygen)
- Equipment includes overhead lifts, portable lifts, vein finders, and bladder scanners
- Focus on patient experience, responsiveness, medication communication, and cultural sensitivity (primarily Hispanic and Somalian populations)
Required Qualifications
- Minimum 2 years of unit experience in PCU or similar setting
- Current BLS, ACLS, and NIHSS certifications
- Valid driver’s license required at submission (used to verify candidate location within 50-mile radius)
- Must pass a 90% score on a pass/fail open book skills exam during orientation
- Competency in arterial line care and drip titration required
- Flexibility, adaptability, teamwork, and strong communication skills essential
Orientation & Policies
- One day of unit-specific orientation
- Fingernail policy: Artificial nails prohibited in all patient care areas; refusal to comply results in contract termination
- Dress code: Navy blue scrubs
- No blocked scheduling except weekends (subject to approval)
- No duo placements or shared care schedules allowed
- Return to office (RTO) required within 7 days of contract start; additional RTO requests will not be approved

- Emphasis on learning, feedback, and flexibility for success in this role
- Floating to other units with similar acuity is expected
