Job Opportunity: Operating Room Registered Nurse
Location: Castro Valley, California
Employment Type: Travel/Contract
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Job Summary
- Provide professional nursing care to surgical patients in the Operating Room (OR).
- Responsibilities include planning, managing, and coordinating nursing care, providing specialized treatment, supervising ancillary nursing personnel, and collaborating with the healthcare team.
- Participate in surgical cases as scrub or circulating nurse, maintaining AORN standards.
- Work involves handling bodily fluids, emergency/crisis situations, and exposure to unpredictable, high-risk environments (OSHA Risk Category I).
- Shift: Day shift, 5 days a week, 8 hours per day (7:00 AM – 3:30 PM).
Required Qualifications
- Valid Registered Nurse (RN) license in California.
- Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) or Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN).
- Minimum 3 years of Operating Room (OR) nursing experience, including experience within the last year.
- At least 1 year of travel nursing experience.
- Certifications:
- Basic Life Support (BLS) issued by American Heart Association (AHA) or American Red Cross (ARC) only.
- Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS).
- Specialized surgical nursing experience in Orthopedics, Vascular Surgery, Trauma, and Neurology.
Work Schedule & Requirements
- On-call as needed.
- Weekend requirement: Every other weekend.
Background & Compliance Requirements
- 7-year background check covering all aliases, county searches, nationwide checks, sex offender search, and education verification.
- FACIS Level 3 screening required within 2 weeks of start and monthly thereafter.
- Drug screening: Negative 9-panel drug test within 6 months of start (excluding marijuana/cannabinoids per California law).
- Employment application must include full 7 years of work history with no gaps.
- References: 2 professional references within 3 years required.
Health & Immunization Requirements
- Physical exam within 1 year of start, cleared for work.
- Fit mask test within 1 year, renewed annually (specific mask types required).
- Immunizations and/or titers required:
- Tetanus/Diphtheria/Tdap (within 10 years)
- Negative TB test or chest X-ray within 90 days, renewed annually
- Measles (Rubeola), Mumps, Rubella – proof of immunity or vaccination boosters as needed
- Hepatitis B series or signed declination
- Varicella immunity or vaccination boosters as needed
- Seasonal flu vaccination during flu season (Nov 1 – Apr 30) or signed declination with mask requirement in patient care areas
- Drug testing and respiratory safety clearance required prior to start.
Required Documentation & Training
- Must review and sign facility-specific documents including:
- Job description
- Standards of Business Conduct
- Code of Conduct
- Overpayment Refund Policy
- Regulatory Orientation for Contracted Workers
- TB Screening Questionnaire signed by candidate and healthcare provider within 90 days of start, renewed annually.
- Competency exams and medication/pharmacology tests as applicable.
- Unit-specific skills checklist required, renewed annually.
Additional Notes
- Ability to work in high-risk, emergency, and unpredictable situations.
- Must be able to discriminate fine sounds and work with bodily fluids.
- Candidate must comply with all background, health, and facility-specific requirements prior to start.
- Religious exemptions for certain immunizations and PPE requirements may be considered on a case-by-case basis with appropriate documentation.
