Cath Lab Registered Nurse Travel/Contract Position

Location: Winston Salem, North Carolina
Contract Length: 13 weeks


Job Summary

Provide specialized nursing care in the Diagnostic and Interventional Cardiac Catheterization Lab with a focus on cardiovascular procedures and patient monitoring.


Work Schedule

  • Shift: Monday to Friday, 5 days a week, 8-hour day shifts (06:45 AM – 03:15 PM)
  • Occasional late days (4-5 times per month, rarely past 5 PM)
  • Call: One day per week and every fifth weekend
  • Float: As needed
  • Weekend shifts: None
  • Patient ratio: 1:1

Patient Population & Diagnoses

Patients with a range of cardiovascular conditions including:

  • Coronary artery disease (stable angina, unstable angina/NSTEMI, STEMI)
  • Heart failure
  • Valvular disease
  • Congenital heart disease
  • Pulmonary hypertension
  • Pericardial disease
  • Pre-operative cardiovascular evaluation

Procedures & Skills Required

Core Procedures

  • Cardiac Stent Placement
  • Diagnostic Catheterizations (Adult)
  • Intra-Aortic Balloon Pump (IABP) Placement/Removal
  • Interventional Catheterizations
  • Left and Right Heart Catheterization
  • Percutaneous Coronary Interventions (PCI)
  • Pulmonary Artery Line/Swan Ganz monitoring
  • Procedural Sedation Administration and Monitoring
  • Sheath Removal and Monitoring

Medications & IV Therapy

  • Antiarrhythmics, Antihypertensives, Emergency Medications
  • IV Vasopressors
  • Thrombolytics
  • Blood Product Administration
  • IV infusion pumps and starting IVs

Professional Knowledge & Monitoring

  • 12 Lead EKG interpretation
  • Activated Clotting Time (ACT)
  • Cardioversion
  • Dysrhythmia interpretation and management
  • Infection prevention and isolation precautions
  • Richmond Agitation-Sedation Scale
  • Malignant Hyperthermia Protocols

Preferred Additional Skills (Not Required)

  • ASD Closures, Cardiac Implant Closure Device
  • Impella insertion, Rotablader athrectomy
  • Transcatheter Aortic Valve implantation/replacement (TAVI/TAVR)
  • Angioplasty, dialysis graft interventions, extremity angiography
  • Central line insertion/management assistance, implanted ports, PICC line care
  • End-Tidal CO2 monitoring, external compression devices
  • Hypothermia protocols, laser-assisted procedures
  • Pressure ulcer assessment/prevention
  • Radiation and laser safety
  • Topical hemostasis and vascular closure systems
  • Ventilator monitoring

Special Equipment Used

  • Impella, Penumbra, EKOS, Roto, Ultrasound, Shockwave, ACIST
  • GE Mac Lab system

Orientation & Training

  • Unit Orientation: 16 hours
  • Scrubs: Provided

Requirements/Qualifications

  • Valid Registered Nurse (RN) license in North Carolina
  • Minimum 2 years of experience in Cardiac Cath Lab nursing
  • Cardiac Cath Lab experience within the last year
  • Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) or Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN)
  • Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification issued by the American Heart Association or American Red Cross

Compliance & Background Requirements

  • Background checks including local, federal, national criminal databases, DOJ sex offender search, and education verification for highest degree earned
  • Drug screening within 30 days of start (10-panel, negative result required)
  • Physical exam within 1 year of start (30 days if past positive TB)
  • Fit mask testing (N95 or PAPR training) within 1 year of start
  • Immunizations and titers required: Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Rubella, Varicella, Hepatitis B (or facility-specific declination), Flu vaccine or approved exemption
  • Negative TB test or chest x-ray per protocol
  • Annual compliance and medication safety training
  • Medication test/pharmacology competency as applicable
  • Dysrhythmia/EKG competency exam within 72 hours of start (minimum 82% score required)

Documentation & Administrative Requirements

  • Employment application and skills checklist as applicable
  • Confidentiality agreement and hospital policies acknowledgment
  • Facility-specific education modules and orientation checklists
  • Photo for badge (passport style, white background, business attire) required immediately after signing contract
  • Corporate ID and I-Learn account setup within 72 hours of contract signing
  • Radiation badge required for Cath Lab staff

  • Candidates must be prepared for call and float requirements as outlined
  • No weekend shifts required
  • Candidates must be able to work in a fast-paced, high-acuity cardiac cath lab environment
  • Professional references required per agency standards
