ICU Registered Nurse Travel/Contract Job – Chesapeake, Virginia
Job Overview
- Location: Chesapeake, Virginia (near Virginia Beach and Norfolk)
- Employment Type: Travel/Contract
- Contract Length: 13 weeks
- Shift: Nights, 3 shifts per week, 12 hours each (7:00 PM – 7:30 AM)
- Work Schedule: 3x12 or 4x12 shifts (overtime billed after 48 hours on 4x12 schedule)
- Patient Populations:
- Neurosurgical and post-stroke
- Respiratory failure
- Renal failure
- Post-surgical
- Trauma
- Sepsis and MODS
- Heart failure and post-cardiac catheterization
Required Qualifications
- Valid RN license in Virginia
- Minimum 1 year of ICU (Intensive Care Unit) experience, with ICU experience within the last year
- ACLS certification
- BLS certification issued by the American Heart Association
- NIH Stroke Scale (NIHSS) certification
- Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) or Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN)
- Experience with Epic electronic health record system
Additional Requirements & Conditions
- Background: Zero tolerance for any license or background issues; 7-year criminal background check required with no hits
- Distance: Candidates must reside more than 50 miles from the facility (local candidates within 50 miles will not be accepted)
- Identification: Government-issued photo ID and valid driver’s license required for address verification before offer acceptance
- Testing & Competencies:
- Pass/fail EKG and medication competency testing at orientation (minimum 80% score, one attempt only)
- Medication/pharmacology competency exam as applicable
- Color blindness test (100% passing score required)
- Health Requirements:
- Physical exam within 12 months of start date, updated annually
- Fit test for N95 mask within 1 year of start, updated annually (PAPR not allowed)
- Negative TB test (PPD, Quantiferon Gold, or T-spot) within 1 year; if history of positive TB, chest x-ray and questionnaire required
- Required immunizations or titers within 10 years: Measles (Rubeola), Mumps, Rubella, Hepatitis B, Varicella (boosters or declinations allowed based on unit)
- Tdap vaccine required for certain units (not applicable here)
- Negative 10-panel drug screen within 12 months
- Seasonal flu vaccination required annually (or approved exemption with mask requirement)
- COVID vaccine preferred but not required
- Documentation:
- Proof of 2 professional references
- Completed employment application/resume
- Unit-specific skills checklist updated annually
- Photo for badge (passport style, shoulders up, plain background)
- Various facility-specific forms and acknowledgments (e.g., Pyxis acknowledgment, job description, fingerprinting forms)
- Fingerprinting: Required via Virginia State Police National Criminal Background Check; must be completed and cleared prior to start
- Orientation: Includes safety manual acknowledgment and pass/fail testing
Important Notes
- Overtime is available after 48 hours on 4x12 shifts
- Candidates must indicate shift preference (3x12 or 4x12)
- Floating to other units is mandatory as needed
- No exceptions for license or background issues
- EPIC proficiency is mandatory
- Local candidates within 50 miles will not be considered
