Description
Registered Nurse - Step Down Unit (Travel/Contract)
Location: San Francisco, California
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Job Summary
- Provide comprehensive patient- and family-centered care within the scope and standards of professional nursing practice.
- Work in an 8-bed Medical-Surgical Telemetry (MST) overflow unit (Progressive Care Unit/Stepdown).
Shift Details
- Night shift: 3 shifts per week, 12 hours each (7:00 PM – 7:30 AM)
- Rotating weekends
- No on-call requirements
Required Qualifications
- Valid Registered Nurse (RN) license in California
- Minimum 1 year of Stepdown nursing experience within the last year
- Basic Life Support (BLS) certification issued by the American Heart Association or American Red Cross
- Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) or Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN)
Certifications (as applicable/position dependent)
- Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS)
- Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS)
- Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP) – Instructor or Advanced Provider Course
- Critical Care RN (CCRN)
- Trauma Nursing Core Course (TNCC)
- Electronic Fetal Monitoring (EFM) – typically for Labor & Delivery
- Crisis Prevention Institute (CPI)
- IV Certification (venipuncture) may be required
- NIH Stroke Certification
- Other certifications may be required based on position specifics
Background and Screening Requirements
- 7-year background check including SSN trace with all aliases, county searches, nationwide sex offender search, education verification, and FACIS Level 3 screening
- Annual updates required for EPLS/GSA/SAM, HHS/OIG, and FACIS screenings
- Drug screening: Negative 9-panel drug screen within 6 months (excluding marijuana/cannabinoids per CA law)
- Employment history verification covering 7 years with no gaps over 30 days; attestations allowed only for gaps under 1 year
- References: 2 professional references within 3 years (clinical/allied/per diem acute care)
Health and Immunization Requirements
- Physical exam within 1 year of start, cleared for work
- Fit mask test within 1 year, renewed annually (specific mask types required)
- Tuberculosis (TB) screening: Negative QGold or TSPOT within 90 days or 2-step PPD testing
- Immunizations or titers required:
- Tetanus/Diphtheria/Tdap (within 10 years)
- Measles (Rubeola)
- Mumps
- Rubella
- Hepatitis B (series or declination)
- Varicella
- Seasonal flu vaccination during flu season (Nov 1 – Apr 30) or signed declination
- Color vision exam (in-person) if applicable
- Respiratory safety clearance, renewed annually
Medical or religious exemptions may be considered with appropriate documentation and facility-specific forms.
Competency Exams
- Medication/Pharmacology competency exam as applicable
- Dysrhythmia/EKG competency exam may be required for some telemetry units
- Unit-specific skills checklist, renewed annually
Facility-Specific Requirements
- Review and sign facility policies including:
- Job description
- Standards of business conduct
- Code of conduct
- Overpayment refund policy
- Vendor training (current and upcoming years)
- General regulatory orientation for contracted workers
- Complete facility-specific attestations prior to start (e.g., conditional offer of employment, religious accommodation requests)
- Photo for badge (per diem only)
