ICU Registered Nurse Travel/Contract Job - Chesapeake, Virginia


Job Details

  • Location: Chesapeake, Virginia (approximately 50+ miles from facility; local candidates within 50 miles not accepted)
  • Employment Type: Travel/Contract
  • Contract Length: 13 weeks
  • Shift: Night shift, 4x12 hour shifts (7:00 PM - 7:30 AM)
  • Hours per Week: 48 hours
  • Patient Populations:
    • Neurosurgical and post-stroke
    • Respiratory failure
    • Renal failure
    • Post-surgical
    • Trauma
    • Sepsis and MODS
    • Heart failure and post-cardiac catheterization

Job Description & Responsibilities

  • Float to Stepdown Unit; may also float to Emergency Department or MedSurg to care for ICU patients being held.
  • Patient ratio approximately 1:2-3.
  • Skills required:
    • Strong neuro experience (post-neurosurgical, EVD, stroke care)
    • Ventilator management
    • IV drip titration
    • Telemetry monitoring
    • Conscious sedation
    • Dysrhythmia and emergency management
  • Must be EPIC proficient.
  • Overtime billed after 48 hours on 4x12 shifts.

Required Qualifications

  • Valid RN license in Virginia
  • Neuro ICU experience of at least 1 year, with experience within the last year
  • ACLS certification
  • BLS certification issued by the American Heart Association
  • NIH Stroke Scale (NIHSS) certification
  • Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) or Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN)
  • Experience with ventilator management
  • Experience with IV drip titration
  • Experience with conscious sedation
  • Proficiency with Epic electronic health record system

Background & Compliance Requirements

  • Zero tolerance for any license or background hits; candidates must have clean background checks.
  • 7-year criminal background check required, including all locations lived/worked in past 7 years.
  • EPLS/GSA/SAM and HHS/OIG checks required within 30 days of start and updated for renewals.
  • Fingerprinting required via Virginia State Police National Criminal Background Check.
  • Government-issued photo ID (Driver’s License/State ID) required for address verification.
  • Proof of diploma or transcript required.
  • E-Verify required for direct placements.
  • References: Proof of 2 professional references required.
  • Employment application/resume required.
  • Unit-specific skills checklist required and must be updated annually.

Health & Safety Requirements

  • Physical exam within 12 months of start, updated annually.
  • Negative TB test (PPD, Quantiferon Gold, or T-spot) within 1 year; if history of positive TB, additional documentation required.
  • Fit test for N95 mask within 1 year, updated annually; PAPR not allowed.
  • Immunizations and titers required within 10 years or valid declination forms:
    • Rubeola (Measles)
    • Mumps
    • Rubella
    • Hepatitis B
    • Varicella (declination not accepted for Mother Baby or infant/peds units)
  • Tetanus/Diphtheria/Tdap vaccine required within past 10 years for specific units (Mother Baby, L&D, Nursery, ER); no exemptions accepted.
  • Seasonal flu vaccination required annually (Oct 31 deadline); medical/religious exemptions allowed with mask requirement.
  • COVID-19 vaccine preferred but not required; documentation collected if available.
  • Negative 10-panel drug screen within 12 months of start.

Additional Requirements

  • Passport-style photo (shoulders up, front facing, plain background) required before start.
  • Completion of facility-specific forms including:
    • Job description acknowledgment
    • Pyxis acknowledgment (for RNs)
    • Fingerprinting forms and scheduling
    • TB questionnaire if applicable
    • Latex allergy form if applicable
    • COVID-19 and flu exemption forms if applicable
  • Pass/fail EKG and medication competency testing required at orientation; must score 80% or higher with only one attempt.
  • Medication test/pharmacology competency exam required as applicable.
  • Color blindness testing required; must pass with 100% (retake allowed once).
  • Orientation safety manual acknowledgment required.
  • Acknowledgment of pass/fail testing required for ICU, Stepdown, ER, Telemetry, MS/Tele, Endoscopy, PACU, Surgical Admitting Unit.

Notes

  • Candidates must provide a valid driver’s license for address verification prior to offer acceptance.
  • Candidates residing less than 50 miles from the facility will not be considered.
  • OT is available after 48 hours on 4x12 shifts.
  • Strong neuro experience is mandatory.
  • Prior travel experience is preferred but not mandatory.

This position offers an opportunity to work in a critical care ICU setting with a focus on neurological and complex patient populations in a coastal Virginia location.
