Description
Registered Nurse (Surgical Acute)
Location: Phoenix, Arizona
Unit: Tower 8 - Trauma, Orthopedics, Surgical
Unit Size: 30 beds
Shift: Nights
Hours: 12-hour shifts, 36 hours/week
Weekend Requirement: 3 shifts per 4-week period (4 total weekend shifts per 4 weeks)
Holiday Requirement: Work holidays as part of permanent staff rotation
Job Description
- Care for patients primarily post-op transplant (lung, liver, kidney), Whipple procedures, spine, orthopedic joints, and trauma cases
- Trauma Level I experience required
- Teaching hospital environment; nurses may have nursing students assigned
- Nurse-to-patient ratio: 1:4-5
- Charge Nurse role present but does not take patients
- Nurse aides available: 2 on days, 1 on nights
- Floating expected to Medical-Surgical/Telemetry floors and possibly other nearby campuses
- Floor-specific orientation: 2 shifts
- Use of Cerner EMR system
- Telemetry monitoring with Phillips equipment
- Ventilator support includes BiPAP and CPAP
- IV team support available (SWAT RN)
- Respiratory Therapy and Pharmacy available 24/7
- Scrub color: Navy
Required Qualifications
- Registered Nurse (RN) license valid in Arizona
- Minimum 2 years of core specialty experience in Surgical Acute or related trauma/critical care
- Level I Trauma experience required
- BLS (AHA) and ACLS certifications required
- Minimum 2 years telemetry experience
- Prior travel experience required for Emergency Department and Neuro ICU specialties (if applying for those areas)
- Must pass Prophecy Dysrhythmia Exam within 24-48 hours prior to position acceptance (max 2 attempts; failure results in 6-month disqualification in region)
- Must pass Day 1 pass/fail SIMs Lab (skills include Foley catheter insertion, central line dressing changes, lifts, restraints, wound care)
- No facial piercings and natural hair colors only (no unnatural colors)
- Male candidates must be clean-shaven for fit testing
- Must have own vehicle if part of a travel team
- Must comply with a 50-mile radius rule for commuting (driver’s license is source of truth)
- Cannot hold concurrent contracts with other employers during assignment
- Must have been off permanent staff at this health system for at least 12 months to qualify for travel assignment
Orientation & Onboarding
- Weekly orientations held on Mondays (except holiday weeks)
- Onboarding paperwork must be completed by 1pm CST Wednesday before start date; incomplete files will delay start
- Floor-specific orientation: 2 shifts
- SIMs Lab is pass/fail and critical for maintaining sterile technique competency

- Facility is a large tertiary care center with a nationally recognized transplant program and Level I trauma center
- Parking assigned with shuttle service; night shift parking in garage
- Large transplant and Whipple patient population
- Day 1 pass/fail exam required during orientation
- Travelers may be expected to work with nursing students
- Floating may include other campuses nearby
