Description

Registered Nurse – Surgical PCU (Ventilator Experience Required)

Location: Roanoke, Virginia
Employment Type: Travel/Contract
Contract Length: 13 weeks


Shift Details

  • Night shift: 3 shifts of 12 hours each (6:45 PM – 7:15 AM)
  • Weekend requirement: Every other weekend or 6 weekend shifts within a 6-week block
  • Must work one holiday during the 13-week contract
  • Staffing ratio typically 1:5, with a goal of 1:4
  • Floating within skillset required

Unit & Patient Population

  • Stepdown unit from General Surgical ICU with bariatric specialty and trauma backup
  • Care for chronic trach patients (2 beds, not ICU level) requiring ventilator support (CPAP, BiPAP)
  • Equipment includes ortho equipment, chest tubes, surgical drains, trach, endotracheal tools, PICC lines, and MML
  • IV drips managed: Cardizem, Heparin, Insulin, low-dose dopamine/dobutamine, Amiodarone, Nitro, Bumex, Lasix, Lidocaine, Ketamine
  • Remote telemetry monitors remain on unit; tele-sitting used to increase Patient Care Tech coverage

Required Clinical Skills

  • Cardiac monitoring, emergency response, dysrhythmia interpretation and management
  • IV therapy, phlebotomy, blood product administration, central and peripheral line care
  • Ventilator care for chronic trach patients
  • Medication administration including cardiac drips (no titration)
  • Respiratory support: nasal cannula, oxygen administration, CPAP, BiPAP
  • Rapid Response and Code team activation
  • Isolation precautions and telemetry settings across PCU, DOU, IMC, and stepdown units

Required Certifications

  • ACLS (American Heart Association only)
  • BLS (American Heart Association only)
  • NIH Stroke Scale Certification (as applicable)

Licensure

  • Active Virginia State RN license or Compact RN license required
  • Pending license accepted only if holding a single-state license from a non-compact state

Experience Requirements

  • Specialty: Registered Nurse with ventilator experience (years of experience not explicitly stated; assume standard RN competency with ventilator care)
  • Prior travel experience: Not required; first-time travelers accepted

Documentation & Compliance Requirements

  • Drivers License/State ID with address within 100 miles of facility required within 48 hours of signing
  • 7-year background check covering all locations lived/worked in past 7 years (must be current within 1 year of start)
  • E-Verify or attestation required
  • Education verification of highest earned degree required (transcript or diploma may be accepted as placeholder)
  • NURSYS verification required within 30 days of start
  • Physical exam within 1 year confirming freedom from communicable diseases
  • Negative 10-panel drug screen within 30 days of start
  • Fit test for mask within 1 year, updated annually (acceptable masks: 1860S, 1860, 1870+, 1804S)
  • Negative TB test (PPD, QGold, or TSpot) within 1 year, updated annually; if past positive, clear chest X-ray within 1 year and annual TB questionnaire
  • Required immunizations or positive titers: Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Rubella, Hepatitis B, Varicella
  • Flu vaccination documentation or signed declination form (masking required if declined)
  • 2 clinical references required
  • Complete employment application/resume
  • Annual skills checklist update required
  • Photo for badge (professional, plain background, no selfies or filters)
  • Completion of facility-specific compliance and confidentiality agreements prior to start

Requirements/Qualifications

  • Valid RN license in Virginia
  • Minimum of 1 year of recent experience in a Progressive Care Unit (PCU) within the last year
  • Ventilator care experience for chronic trach patients
  • Current ACLS certification issued by the American Heart Association
  • Current BLS certification issued by the American Heart Association
  • NIH Stroke Scale (NIHSS) certification
  • Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) or Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN)
  • Experience with Epic electronic health record system

Additional Notes

  • Charting experience with EPIC required
  • Facility allows call off of 1 shift per 2 weeks
  • Locals accepted within radius rule criteria
  • Orientation manual review required prior to start (not required for inpatient RNs as of 7/10/23)
  • Candidate must acknowledge pain assessment expectations for inpatient RNs at this facility

This position offers the opportunity to work in a large, Level I Trauma Center with Magnet designation and advanced specialty care services including bariatric, trauma, and surgical units.
